Recruiting Report: Ramon Mercado (2018)
Cordia 2018 Ramon Mercado has been hard at work the this summer continuing to establish himself as one of the state’s top young prospects.
The 6-foot-3 point guard received his first and only current standing offer last summer, and has seen some interest come in from a few other Division I programs.
“I hold an offer from EKU, and I’ve been contacted by Samford, Middle Tennessee State, and I spoke to Seton Hall and went on a visit there,” said Mercado, who detailed his Seton Hall visit.
“It’s a great campus, and it has a great coaching staff and great facilities. I really liked it.”
With still two full high school seasons and and entire 17U offseason left to showcase himself, Mercado says his recruitment is not something he focuses on too much just yet.
“I hope that I can get one of those schools to offer, but I try not to focus on recruitment and rankings too much so it doesn’t distract me,” he said. “But as the time comes closer and closer, it becomes more and more important.”
During his 16U offseason Mercado has been playing with Hoop Dreams, but is finishing up his summer with Team Vision. He says he brings a high hoops IQ to the teams.
“My strength as a player I feel is my IQ. I make the right decisions, I don’t try and rush or force anything. And my style is just to take what the defense gives me, and just let the game come to me,” said Mercado.
“I played pretty well with Hoop Dreams on the adidas circuit during the spring. I switched because I feel like on Team Vision I’ll be more of the guy, Hoop Dreams already had all of the pieces they needed.”
His goals for the final live period this weekend?
“Hopefully I can just pick up another college offer and some more interest,” said Mercado. “Because that’s what we’re playing for.”
