And because the senior-to-be did not play grassroots ball this season — electing to play baseball exclusively — he feels his recruitment has been stunted.
“Right now since I didn’t play AAU, that kind of hurts in terms of recruitment. I have talked to Centre, and that’s the only school I’ve had contact with. I have letters and I’ve talked face-to-face with their coach,” said Brownley, whose dad works at Centre College.
“And as far as what sport I might want to play at the next level: I’m not exactly sure yet. It’ll be a decision I make with my family after this year, and depending on their all the recruitment.”
With baseball now finished for the summer, Brownley looks to shift his focus towards hoops. He defined his playing style to PHK.
“I think I’m pretty strong in the post, that’s where I’ve spent most of my time, just because I’ve been bigger,” he said. “But this year I’ll need to step out and handle the ball a little bit more, which I’m comfortable with. And I’m good at getting to the rim and finishing through contact — I like the physicality in the paint.”
Though he did not play grassroots ball this summer, the versatile power forward says he was still able to get some time in with his high school team, and on his own.
“I play in summer leagues with Male, and I play at the YMCA and in my backyard and stuff like that. I’m really working on my dribbling ability and my shooting,” said Brownley, who will have a much-increased role this season as a senior.
“I would say my role last year was strictly just a post player, we had plenty of people who could handle the ball. This year we’re not going to be as deep, and since I’ve been on varsity since my freshman year I’m going to have to have the ball in my hands more and control the offense a little bit.”
