After a relatively unproductive spring with a Team Manimal team that could not produce many wins, the 6-foot-2 combo guard is eager for a fresh start with a new team, and poised for big July.
“I have not picked up any new offers, we had a slow spring with Team Manimal and lost a lot of games, so that was kind of a bummer,” said the Covington Catholic 2017.
“I’ve been still talking to Notre Dame. I get a lot of mail from Belmont. And Davidson also with some mail and some interest. Wright State has been coming in with some new interest. South Dakota has been reaching out, also Iowa — that’s probably about it lately.”
The Iowa interest comes from a connection one of his high school coaches has with Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffery.
“My assistant coach at my high school is best friends with their head coach. So he’s (McCaffery) come to watch me a couple times and he likes my game. He’s going to keep watching me this July,” saif VanHandorf, who mentioned coaching was most important to him in the recruiting process.
“It (recruitment) has become a priority. I’ve been talking to different coaches; more texting, more calling. Not only do they care about my basketball life, but my personal life, and that’s something I feel is important. I really think that’s important, just the coaches worrying about me.”
VonHandorf added: “I don’t want to have an iffy relationship with my coach. Right now with my high school coaches, I’m really close with all of them, and it’s really convenient. So I’m looking for a coach that cares, and who talks a lot. That’s pretty much it.”
The sharpshooting guard is hoping to make a college decision sometime after July’s live periods and before his season season starts.
“I’m hoping to make a decision obviously after July, and then before high school season starts up — so maybe September, maybe October.”
In the meantime he’ll be running with Indiana Elite this summer.
“I started out with Team Manimal, and I just didn’t feel like that was a great fit for me. So I switched over to Indiana Elite, they made it to the adidas (Gauntlet) finals in Spartanburg (SC), so I’m excited for that,” said VonHandorf.
“I’m just hoping to find the right schools that are the right fit for me, and not settling for a lower school, but trying to find the fit at a higher Division I school.”
