“I am a stretch forward,” Beckham said. “I can stretch floor as well as shoot the three. I’ve extended my range this past year a lot. I have experience with my back to the basket so I can score in the post. I can guard well on the perimeter. Energy is what I need to bring to my game.”
Beckham played a solid role in the Spartans’ success last season. The player averaged 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Although his numbers mind of not been mind-blowing, Beckham says he is ready to step up and be the team leader this year.
“For my senior season, I will be entering with another new coach,” Beckham told me. “This will be my 4th varsity coach in 4 years. I’m looking to adjust quickly and be the leader of my team. We are a younger team this year and I have experience so I want to help lead the team to success. The goal is to always go to Region because as a school we have never competed in one.
“I would like to end my senior season with a winning record and compete in the District Championship.”
Beckham played for We All Can Go on the AAU Circuit this summer. He says he played very well.
“I had a very solid summer,” Beckham stated. “I played against many shoe teams and high major talent – which we competed with and beat. I feel that me playing against this type of competition only makes me better and will help me excel in the high school season.”
Although Beckham doesn’t have any offers yet, he says he has been shown interest from Montevallo, Brescia, Lindsey Wilson, Lincoln Memorial, Oxford College of Emory University and has camps coming up for Trevecca University and Central Missouri. Beckham says more programs and coaches should start to reach out because he is a good person all-around.
“My game should catch coaches’ eyes because I am, first of all, a good student and person outside the court,” he said. “I’m a big-bodied player who can create match-up problems by stretching the floor with the 10-15 foot mid-range and 3-ball. I can also score down low. I bring a lot of energy to the team, and I have a strong basketball IQ. I’m a team player and dedicate myself to the game.”
In the classroom, the athlete says he is a good student.
“I’m a good student,” Beckham said. “I believe that the academics always come first. No matter what. I have a 3.8 GPA. I’ve always put forth the effort in the classroom, and I try to push myself by taking AP and Dual Credit classes.”
On top of all Beckham does to excel, he says last year’s South Warren club taught him how he needed to adjust for this season.
“Last year was a year where, once again, we had to adjust as a team with a new coach,” Beckham noted. “The first half of the season was rough. We started off 4-9. We played our Christmas tournaments and I believe it bonded us and we decided to play. We won 6-of-7 games and ended up in the District 14 Semifinals, losing to a very good Bowling Green team.
“Last years team was very special. I had played with the seniors for 4-5 years, and last year taught me a lot on how I need to adjust and lead for my senior year.”
