Continue ReadingOver his high school career 2019 Combo Guard Adokiye Iyaye has shown he has great talent on the court. He stands at 6’3 trending upwards at the two. Iyaye has played his first two years at Piedmont high school scoring the basketball with ease.
However, on the grassroots scene Iyaye has struggled to find playing time at times. Last year he played on Athletes First (Team Griffin) as a freshmen he did not receive a whole lot of playing time. But the experience of the Nike EYBL payed off getting to see everything and learn the game.
This grassroots season Iyaye has played consistent minutes for Team Griffin on the Nike Circuit. The best way to describe Iyaye’s use on Team Griffin is the utility player. What ever the team needs Iyaye does. He is the definition of a team player.
Not many schools know Iyaye yet, but mark my words that is getting ready to change. He has the tools to be a great combo guard option at the next level. Being young on an experienced Nike EYBL squad can be tough. Iyaye learned a lot from last year and has used it this year to his advantage. In the spring sessions of the Nike EYBL Iyaye averaged just 4 points per game. But that is getting ready to change as Iyaye will now get more minutes and be a focal point in the offense.
Iyaye has waited his turn on the Nike EYBL circuit. He is ready to show the country his talents.
“I want to become a better player and get some recognition in the July live periods,” Iyaye said. “I want to show everyone I have been working hard and can play with the best.”
Iyaye plays at the two mostly for Team Griffin even sometimes at the 3 and on a rare occasion at the 4 due to lack of size. Over the summer Iyaye has been working hard on his ball handling skills to be able to play at the Point as well.
“I have been working on my all-around game.” Iyaye said. “I want to be a combo guard and be able to play the Point and the two. I’m more of a two with Team Griffin, which gives me the ability to shoot and create with the ball.”
Iyaye excels on defense using his footwork to stay with his opponents. When Iyaye gets going on offense he is attacking the rim relentlessly. Out in transition Iyaye dominates with his quickness to the cup. Throughout his early career Iyaye has deferred offensively, but on of the things he is working on in July is being more aggressive. Iyaye projects as a Division I player. What level of Division I is currently unknown. July should provide a good answer on what level as we see Iyaye play more minutes and a prominent role on Team Griffin.
Iyaye will kick off July with Team Griffin at the Peach Jam Invitational in Augusta, Georgia. Follow Prep Hoops for continued coverage of the PIT and Peach Jam.
