Mason Harrell 2018 PG Carl Albert
As a back to back state champion, Harrell plays with a silent confidence that makes it obvious why he has been so successful so far in his career. Harrell ran the show for the Titans and consistently made plays for himself and others. Standing at 5’8, he has an incredible ability to finish in the lane with floaters and layups with either hand which is crucial for a guard of his stature. Harrell didn’t shoot many shots outside of the paint but he didn’t need to and it showed his maturity to stick with what works. Harrell is setting up for a big year for Carl Albert as they chase another state title and he began that journey with a successful first day of camp.
Jalen Redmond 2018 F Midwest City
Redmond had a big week on the gridiron as he showed his natural talent as a defensive end but that didn’t affect his play Day 1 of SNU team camp. He got off to a slow start in an intense game with cross-town rival Carl Albert but got back to what he does best. Redmond may be the best finisher in the state as he showed a wide variety of layups and even took out some aggression on the rim as he got two huge dunks. Redmond needs to improve his motor when he is not directly involved in the play but he did a great job of rebounding and finishing contact. Redmond should enjoy these times on the floor with his teammates as his football profile is about to explode.
Chris Potts 2017 SG PC West
With one of the better strokes in 6A, Potts put himself on the map with hot shooting streak last year that helped catapult the Patriots to a state championship. Potts found his shot Day 1 of camp as he hit shots from deep but also got out on the break. The foundation of Potts game is on the perimeter but he can get to the paint off the dribble which he showed. He will have an abundance of opportunities to boost his stock even more as PC West will play in the OSU team camp and summer league at Westmoore. With a good showing day 1, Potts seems poised to have a successful summer.
George Price 2017 SG PC West
Price is 6’1 but looks taller as he has a long slender body that coaches look for at the next level. His wing span allows him to get into passing lanes to create steals. There are a lot of kids that look like Price physically but not many have his natural scoring ability. His ability to shoot from three while also driving to the basket was on display at camp day 1. As Price transitions from Harding Prep last year to PC West, he will have to find his role on a very guard heavy team. If he can stay hot and keep making plays then he will not have an issue getting on the floor for the Patriots.
Trey Hopkins 2018 SG Carl Albert
Hopkins is one of the most gifted athletes in the state. Unfortunately for the competition, his gift can cause major issues as Hopkins had a “Vince Carter in the Olympics” type of dunk in their first game of camp. He is a highlight reel waiting to happen but he also showed improved skill off the dribble and the IQ to use ball screens. Standing at 6’3, Hopkins has a powerful body and his leaping ability allow to rise up over defenders as he shoots. He played really well against Midwest City as he finished layups with contact and got easy baskets off fastbreaks. He shot a few shots that could be considered settling but summer league is the perfect time to work on a weakness of his game. As he showed his improved skills, he didn’t hesitate to show off that gift again when threw down powerful dunks on more than one occasion.
Keyshawn Embery 2018 G Midwest City
Embery is scoring machine with a beautiful stroke. When labeled a scorer, other parts of a player’s game can get lost behind the scoring total. Embery was impressive day 1 not because of his scoring but because of his defense and versatility. He didn’t have shoot it well but he made key plays when it counted. In a grind it out game versus Carl Albert, Embery did a good job of moving his feet and competing on the defensive end and making key plays on offense when the game was coming to an end. His stock will continue to rise and he has many great scoring games ahead of him but his ability to make plays when his shot wasn’t falling was impressive.
