Shawnee State will Host VCC Nova Quintet Tuesday
The month of June gives countless high school hoopers opportunities. Dominating at the right camps or visits can lead to college scholarships. AAU is not the only way to make a great impression.
“I have got a group,” said VCC Nova AAU Coach Shawn Brown. “I am taking five kids to Shawnee State tomorrow.”
The NAIA-school founded in 1986, located in southern Ohio’s Portsmouth, is building a nice basketball reputation.
Shawnee State History Lesson
Despite a relatively young basketball program history, Shawnee State boasts numerous All-Conference players and a handful of Shawnee State University Athletic Hall of Fame inductees.
Though Brian Williams (1988-1990) was the first inductee to represent Bears basketball he was followed by Kirk Ruggles, Randall Pennington, Bryan Dyer, Travis Merry, and Adam Davenport (2001-2005). Will one of Coach Brown’s players wind up on that list someday?
Shawnee State eagerly welcomes Gavin Brown, Tavon Brown, Armon Nasseri, Matt Smith, and DJ Corbett to campus tomorrow. Brown (Alderson Broaddus), Smith (Bluefield State), and Tavon (Tiffin) have D2 offers on the table.
Nasseri and Corbett have significant contact and interest from Shawnee State. The 6-foot-6 Nasseri is also hearing from Walsh, Ashland, and Tiffin, while Corbett continues a dialogue with Malone University.
Just this past weekend Gavin Brown and Matt Smith camped with Urbana where they were standouts among the many.
“Gavin was invited there,” said Coach Brown. “They have been talking to him for a long time. I brought the other kid with me. He is a 6-foot-7 kid. Now he is on their radar, as well. Both will end up with D2 scholarships.”
Tuesday provides another opportunity to collect scholarships. Coach Brown would love to return with five new offers for the five guys.
PrepHoopsOhio collected a list of ELITE (Invited) campers and where they headed last weekend.
