His size at a legitimate 6’7 with the skills to cause problems in the lane on both ends on the floor. With his increased development and a chance to see extended minutes, Winston is primed for a breakout season.
Nelson recently received an invite and competed in the Pangos All-American Camp in Norwalk, California. The three day camp is made up of the top ranked players across the country. While Nelson is still developing his game as a post man, he says he cherished the opportunity to make a name for himself.
“It was a huge honor to be invited to the camp and I really enjoyed my time there,” said Nelson. “Competing with some of the best in the country was great competition and really good learning experience. Tre Duval was a teammate and he taught me a lot about the game.”
Nelson’s production comes from his grit and toughness in the post. He offers a strong presence rebounding the ball and clogging the paint.
In his final year at Norman North, Nelson will have the opportunity to play with one of the nations best players in Trae Young. Young was a hot commodity for many prep schools across the country, but decided to stay home and spend his final year with the Timberwolves. Nelson says he and Young grew close together last year and expects that bond to transfer over to the hardwood.
“Trae and I have always been friends,” Nelson said. “This past year we went on a vacation together and our friendship became more of a brotherhood. He’s one of my best friends, but even more so my family. If he went and did his thing I would have been happy for him cause basketball is business. I am very excited to play with him another year.”
Nelson and Young will carry a lot of the weight for the Timberwolves after losing a lot of talent to graduation and transfer.
Many Ivy League schools have their eye on Winston with his efforts in the classroom. He ranks #1 overall in his class and boast a 4.45 GPA while scoring 28 on his ACT. The academics of Nelson have Brown, Princeton, Yale, and Dartmouth showing interest.
With his senior year in front of him Nelson not only has the ability to capture a state title, but obtain several scholarship offers as well. He has lots of size and potential to be a Power Forward at the next level. If he can put together a solid senior campaign, he should expect lots of lower level Division I attention with his grades as well as Division II schools looking at his skills on the court.
