Continue ReadingConcord, North Carolina native Rechon Black, a class of 2018 point guard who has committed to the University of North Carolina, was among a handful of talented rising senior point guards invited to NBPA Top 100 Camp last week in Charlottesville. The 6-foot-7 lead guard explained his decision to commit early, and what he will bring to the program at Chapel Hill.
“I committed early because I didn’t wanna lead the coaches on. Like wait ’til my senior year then do all this stuff, you know,” Black explained. “They think I’m coming to their school then I mess around. I could mess up their recruitment, I didn’t wanna do that I wanna give everybody a fair shot. So I just went ahead and got that over with.”
Black plays a very mature brand of basketball. He exhibits very good defensive potential, along with an improving offensive skill set. Black is an old school floor general who gets his teammates involved, and keeps them engaged.
“I think my leadership is underrated,” Black began. “I think I get my teammates the ball. I think I just give everybody that extra boost to play harder, but that goes in the dark sometimes.”
Per NCAA regulations, June 15 was the first official day when Black could speak directly with the coaching staff at North Carolina. To little surprise, they’ve been in frequent contact since the block has been lifted.
“Our relationship is great,” said Black. “The coaches are able to text me now, so we’ve just been texting all day. Coach (Roy) Williams is gonna call me tonight around 9 when we’re done with camp.”
Black says he’s committed to becoming a better shooter. He’s also in the weight room and gym every day, adding strength and getting as many shots up per day he can. He embraces the grind, and cares about his nutrition. When asked what he will bring to the program at Chapel Hill, he responded with a simple, yet effective answer.
“An extra leader, honestly. Nothing more, nothing less,” Black said.
Given his poise, improving skill, and incredible defensive potential, there’s a good chance Rechon Black will succeed at the next level. He’s a hard-working, unselfish, well-spoken young man who is committed to becoming great.
