Omar Boone of Casady High School is one of the top guards in the state and is looking to move up that list by years end. The 5’10 guard is an athletic guard who is a terrific on-ball defender that can get to the rim at will and is a gifted passer. Boone has gained attention from Fresno State and will gain more momentum in recruiting soon.
The summer is a time where you are either getting better or getting worse and Boone has taken advantage of this critical development period. “I feel like my game has really improved from playing in the EYBL and coaches are really helping me understand the game better,” Boone said.
The Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) is the NBA of AAU and it can be an adjustment for kids including Boone who played for Team Griffin but he started to embrace the different style of play. “It was tough adjusting to the physical play,” Boone said. “I wasn’t used to refs just letting you play but once I got adjusted to that I was fine.”
Playmaking for a point guard can be underrated in today’s game but Boone has a great feel what is going on around him and he has relied on that skill this summer. “I feel like I’m getting my teammates involved better and improving my defense,” Boone said.
You can tell a players IQ if they are aware of their weaknesses and Boone is already addressing his current deficiencies. “I’ve been working on making my shot more consistent and getting in the weight room so I can absorb contact better in the lane,” Boone said.
Casady boys’ basketball will reap the benefits of Boone’s improvement and he is looking forward to this season. “We went undefeated in our side of conference and got to the semi-finals so I feel like we have a really good chance of winning it all this year,” Boone said.
Boone is a disruptive defender and could cause chaos for opposing point guards at the next level. Boone projects as a low D1 or high DII prospect. An improved long distance jumper will dictate where he will land but with Boone’s work ethic and good midrange shot don’t be surprised if he improves.
