Continue ReadingHarrison Riggs (2017), a guard for All-Ohio Red and St. John’s Jesuit (Toledo), has the prototypical combo guard mentality. He’s just as willing to bring the ball up every possession in a given game as he is to play off-ball. Simply wants to make the smart play and contribute to the offensive and defensive game-plan.
He may not be the most physically imposing figure at 5’11”, but he’s definitely been doing this for a while and therefore adapted to his stature.
“First thing, I like to consider myself a pass-first. But I also like to be aggressive. I’m confident in my three-point shot. Confident getting into the lane and distributing it to other people. I consider myself to be pretty unselfish. But if I’m open and I’m feeling it, I’m taking the shot,” Riggs said.
Riggs, who carries a 3.8 GPA and averaged 9 points last season, has been in contact with Tiffin, Hillsdale, Northern Kentucky, Ashland, and West Liberty. The contact with these schools comes at varying degrees. He will be taking a visit to Hillsdale in July.
The incoming high school senior is yet to be offered, but he has a good idea of what he’s looking for.
“I’m a big academics guy … Like with Hillsdale, they’re a really smart school. I was just talking to them last week, and they have like the number one D-II academic school in the country, so that’s really appealing to me. The school I go to now is a pretty good school, so I’m all about school.”
“A good campus, first of all … I don’t want to go to a really small school, because I feel like that’s really isolated and stuff like that. So I want a good campus, nice size. Class sizes are pretty decent and just good academics overall. And obviously a good basketball program,” Riggs said.
In the meantime, Riggs will continue to play in shoot-outs across the state, including at Denison on June 23.
All-Ohio Red did not qualify for Peach Jam this year, but will certainly play against premier competition in July.
Byway of open gyms, weight training, and tutoring, he is focused on improving his defensive abilities and ACT score over the next year, to prepare for the future.
