Continue ReadingSuitland, MD native Darron Barnes has blossomed into one of the most intriguing rising senior prospects in the DMV region. The strong, 6-foot-5 wing, who’s been playing basketball since he was 5, impacts the game in a number of ways. This weekend at the BSN Summer League, Barnes demonstrated toughness, a high basketball IQ, and a solid work rate. He’s prepared to carry the strong momentum he built this past weekend with him into July.
Barnes is running on the grassroots circuit with DC Blue Devils, who compete in the Under Armour Association. A strong wing type, Barnes has the ability to mix it up. Go inside and out. He’s a solid ball-handler. One of the most intriguing attributes he possesses is his passing ability. Barnes has excellent vision and he’s a great distributor.
“My passing is definitely underrated,” said Barnes. “A lot of people are just now starting to notice it.”
Barnes is working on expanding the range of his jump shot, and his ball handling. He’s also trying to shed a few pounds. Towson, James Madison, Nichols State, Sam Houston State, Manhattan and High Point are the schools who he claims offers from. Robert Morris, Albany, Stony Brook, Xavier, West Virginia, and Maryland have each expressed interest. Barnes took a recent visit to Towson. He is planning visits to Stony Brook and Albany in the near future.
“Schools like my strength. How I can mix it up. I’m a rare type of player. Old school. Rugged. Real strong,” Barnes explained. “Not afraid to get down low, get in the trenches and stuff.”
At the high school level, Barnes is effective in the paint as a result of his ability to rebound, hedge screens, and play above the rim. At the next level, he projects as a small forward or even a shooting guard. He will likely end up on the wing wherever he ends up. Regarding his decision, look for Barnes to decide after the summer is over and done with.
“I’m making my decision probably late fall maybe early winter,” Barnes stated. “I want to go somewhere where I can come in and produce/contribute right away.”
By his standards, Barnes doesn’t believe he played very well this spring. He intends to pick it up in July. By the impressive sample he displayed this weekend at DeMatha, he seems prepared to deliver on his promise. Look for Barnes to be one of the more highly recruited rising seniors in the DMV region.
