Lauf, the younger brother of current Toledo Rocket player Jordan Lauf, has made quite an impression on Lafayette College, a school he communicates with often, along with Coach Deron Turner of All Ohio Black.
“I don’t think there’s a guard in the state that I can assertively say is better than him outside of maybe Markell Johnson,” Turner said. “I’m just being real with you … and that’s not take away from those other guys. But if he’s not better, he’s definitely there with them.”
Coach Turner went on to mention that he’s surprised by how quiet his recruitment process has been.
Considering Lauf’s abilities, he’s an under-the-radar prospect at this point. Lafayette was the only school he specifically mentioned during the interview with Prep Hoops.
“The interest right now is lower D-Is and D-IIs. The school I talk to the most is Lafayette in Pennsylvania, Patriot League. I talk to their assistant a lot, Coach Carnegie, he’s a good guy. I mean, I’d love to play on the D-I level for sure, I could see myself doing that,” Lauf said.
What is Lauf looking for in a school?
“If they have what I want to go for, I mean usually everyone does, I want to be a teacher and a coach … I don’t really necessarily like big campuses. I’m not like a big kind of guy. I like to stay on a lower, smaller type campus.”
What about his game on the court?
“Definitely a leader on the floor, I like to keep my teammates involved. I can shoot the ball very well. Attack the rim. I like to have fun on the court and most importantly keep my teammates involved in the game and keep them interested,” Lauf said.
“Trying to get better defensively, on and off the ball. And just get stronger,” Lauf said, when asked about what else he is looking to add to his repertoire.
If you take Coach Turner’s word for it, the sky is the limit for Lauf over the next season. Prep Hoops believes he could play more of a specific role for a Division I program, or lead the charge at any number of Division II schools.
For now, he’s just excited to take care of what’s currently in front of him. One task at a time.
“In July we’re heading to Chicago, there’s going to be a lot of competition there, then back to Columbus before we head off to Florida. So, that’s going to be the highlight of the summer … With my high school this month: open gyms, individual workouts. A lot on my own that I’m going to put in work with. Lots of weight room and one-on-one drills with my buddies.”
