Hayden Shelton Recruiting Update
Apollo High School junior-to-be Hayden Shelton wants to play college basketball…badly.
Judging by his lengthy list of interested schools he just might get that opportunity. The 6-2 combo guard is having a wonderful week.
June fifteenth is the first day of contact for high school sophomores. Shelton was contacted by Delaware Assistant Coach Bill Phillips.
Coach Phillips was hired last week by brand new UD Head Coach Martin Inglesby. New coaching staffs inevitably mean high roster turnover. Can Shelton fit into the new scheme?
Essentially Coach Phillips expressed interest and intimated that Shelton is on their list of targets. He did not extend an offer just yet.
Rice University called Hayden June 15th too. The high-academic outfit has a legacy of bad basketball, but their last recruiting class suggests that may change.
Other schools that have expressed interest in Shelton include: ) Lipscomb, Tennessee State, IUPUI, New Orleans, South Alabama, Georgia Southern, Miami (Oh), Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky, and Samford.
Backbone
Shelton had a nice sophomore year and intends to breakout this upcoming winter. He is working on adding strength and skills to his already well-rounded game.
“All summer I am working on my body lifting weights and trying to gain weight,” said Shelton.
During this month of June Shelton is beginning to assert himself against nearby high school opponents.
“I had 19 points and 5 rebounds against Evansville Central(IN),” said Shelton. “The second game today I had 26 points and 3 rebounds against Evansville North(IN).”
Last year Shelton was used in a supportive role, but his scoring is starting to shine through. He scores plenty with Attucks Wolfpack 16u, his new AAU outfit. The Wolfpack are lead by elite 2018 point guard Jalen Johnson (Hopkinsville).
“I had to adjust to being around a lot of kids who play aggressive like me,” said Shelton. “My role on the team is to rebound, play defense and shoot the ball when I catch it!”
Shelton is a player to keep an eye on in July and beyond.
“My goals in July are to keep improving my individual skills and keep progressing!”
