Recruiting Report: Jerry Higgins (2018)
Jerry Higgins wants your first thoughts of him to be his skill-set, his leadership ability, and his championship pedigree – not his height.
And the 5-foot-9 point guard has made a strong case over the last two seasons with Cleveland VASJ and Ohio Basketball Club to be considered one of 2018’s best point guards.
There is one West Virginia Division II school which has a fast-track on the talented floor-general
“My recruitment has been very slow, but I was offered a full-ride scholarship to Fairmont State after our state final in March. I haven’t been in contact with a lot of other schools, but I hope that changes real soon,” said Higgins.
“I have talked with St. Frances (PA), they came and saw me at a open gym. And that’s it so far.”
Higgins added: “I’m hoping I can continue to get in the gym and more coaches see me. And they can see over my height, and instead see my skill set and my work ethic. And hopefully I can get some interest from some schools over the few months, and then I could show them during the season what I can do; how I can impact a game and why I would be good for them at their college.”
Higgins identifies himself as a point guard who can create for his teammates, particularly on the drive-and-kick, and says his savvy is a strength of his too.
“I’m a guard that can drive, and I can make other players better with my knowledge of the game. And I have a high basketball IQ that allows me to get other people open, and know the floor, and see things before they actually happen,” said Higgins.
“The main thing I’m working on is actually a drive and kick, because at my height in college I think that will be most key.”
Last season at Cleveland VASJ Higgins was the starting point guard as a sophomore, and lead them all the way to a runner-up finish at the state tournament.
“My role on the team was to be a leader on the team; be a vocal leader,” said Higgins. “And we were able to make it down to state and we finished second.”
His role with a supremely talented Ohio Basketball Club is a little different.
“My job is to basically be a facilitator, and to play especially hard on defense,” he said. “I need to get players open, be able to knock down jump shots, and get the other team in foul trouble. And my job is to be the coach on the floor.”
