“It was a dream come true,” said May. “I actually did get nervous about thirty minutes before. I had that little feeling in my stomach, but once I got out there it all calmed down.”
Joining May for the ceremony were many family members, teammates, people from the local press. Also, Asbury Head Coach Will Shouse and Assistant Coach Russell Abner attended. Unlike NCAA D1/D2, NAIA coaches are allowed to attend the signing ceremony.
Asbury finished the season 15-16 in Coach Shouse’s eighth season at the helm. Under Shouse the Eagles have amassed four 20-win seasons.
Last month, the Pikeville senior May picked Asbury over Transylvania, Centre College and College of Mount St. Joseph (OH).
“I watched (Asbury) play once this year,” said May. “I really liked the style of play that they have. They really played fast. That is how I played my whole high school career.”
Style of play, coaching personalities, and location of school all played a big part for May. He verbally committed March 17th, but made it official today in front of friends and family.
May appreciates the fact that Asbury is merely two hours away from his house. The coaches and current players were very welcoming when he visited too.
“All of the guys were very nice, when I met them.”
May intends to join the mix this summer. Asbury, like many college basketball programs, bring in their freshmen early to workout and get acclimated to the new environment.
“I just want to go in and do the best that I can do for the program,” said May. “Hopefully I can contribute to winning the conference tournament and have a good season. I want to try to go in and do whatever I can as a freshman and then I can work my way up from there.”
