He’ll spend his 16U offseason playing with Travelers this spring and summer, and his focus is on improving — especially his perimeter skills — and also picking up some interest.
“I just want to be a better player, more disciplined, also become a better scorer and team player,” said Payne.
“I haven’t really thought about my recruitment much yet, but I hope it starts for me this summer.”
His style of play right now is to score down low and rebound. And though he spent his time manning the paint for the Knights last season as a sophomore, Payne says he’s hoping to develop into a small forward over the next year.
“I like the mid-range jump-shot and I like driving to the hoop. I like playing small forward, but in high school they played me at power forward because I was the right size,” said Payne.
“Right now I need to expand my handles and my range, and work on my shooting. I want to be able to score a lot and handle the ball in the lane, and shoot from anywhere on the court — just become the best I can be.”
His sophomore season season with Lexington Catholic recently wrapped up. Payne was the starting power forward, and said double-doubles were his specialty.
“They just wanted me to contest in the middle,” said Payne. “And hit my jump shots get rebounds, and finish.”
