Freshmen of the Year: Kellen Hines
Hines had the best season of any freshmen leading Fort Cobb-Broxton to capture the Class A State Championship. Hines was a spark plug off the bench for Fort Cobb. He posted 12.7 points, 2 assist, 2.7 rebounds, on 56% shooting from the floor, and 52% from behind the arc. When Fort Cobb needed Hines the most in the Playoffs he stepped up raising his averages to 16 points, 3.2 assists, and 3 rebounds per game. Hines is slightly undersized, but has plenty of time to grow. He has a good handle and one of the best shots Prep Hoops saw all year.
All-Freshmen Team
Micah Thomas Putnam City North Point Guard
Thomas was excellent filling his role perfectly for the Putnam City North Panthers. He scored the ball tremendously in the largest classification in Oklahoma. Thomas was the second leading scorer for Putnam City North for most of the season. He is the prodigy of Micah Speight who was one of the top seniors in the state. Speight and Thomas helped Putnam City North to their first appearance the Class 6A State Tournament in quite some time. Thomas is a young one to keep close tabs on with his ability to light defense up from deep and beating them off of the dribble.
Jett Sternberger Kingfisher Point Guard
Sternberger is not the biggest player on the floor ever, but that does not stop him from draining three-pointers over taller defenders. He has the deepest range in the Freshmen class with his ability to pull up as soon as he crosses half-court. Sternberger plays with a chip on his shoulder at Kingfisher. This year Kingfisher came up short of the State Tournament, but expect him to be at the Big House before his career his over. Sternberger is one of the most exciting players to watch in the freshmen class.
Kobe Burgess Ada Combo Guard
Burgess started at the two guard this season for the Ada Cougars. Burgess is one of the best prospects in the freshmen class with great upside. Burgess scores the basketball with ease in all three phases of the game. Burgess led Ada to a State Tournament appearance in Class 4A. He is certainly a player to keep close tabs on going forward.
Julian Smith Sapulpa Combo Guard
Smith already possess great size as a combo guard. He is an all-around point guard that thrived getting the ball to his teammates. Smith can score the basketball as well with his nice handles and quick first step. Smith is very athletic posing problems for every defense he faced this season. Smith nearly helped Sapulpa to the State Tournament coming up just a game short. Look for big things from Smith going forward.
Seth Hurd Booker T. Washington Power Forward
Hurd was the man in the middle for Booker T. Washington this season. He stands around 6’6″-6’7″ in the paint for the Hornets. The potential for Hurd is through the roof with his size, hands, footwork, and athleticism. He was essential for Booker T. Washington in their playoff run to State. The best thing about Hurd’s game is each time we watched him he continued to progress and get better. If he can continue to improve his footwork, ability to finish through contact around the rim, and his face up jumper from 10-15, lookout.
