Midwest City and Mustang were both unbeaten in the playoffs and one team had to fall to area consolation. In a highly anticipated matchup Midwest City came out with a lot of energy but couldn’t turn their energy into points as they struggled to find field goals in the first half.
Mustang on the other hand tons of success pressuring the ball and getting out in transition. The second half was a different story and that story was written by Midwest City. They gave Mustang a dose of their own medicine by pressuring the ball and get everything easy on the offensive end. Down the stretch both teams exchanged the lead but it was Mustang who was able to hold on to seal the victory 64-62. Curtis Haywood led the Broncos with 19 points.
The Edmond Memorial Bulldogs and Putnam City Pirates faced off in a win or go home consolation game. The game had trouble following up on the excitement of the matchup prior. Edmond Memorial jumped out to an early lead things seemed to be a slaughter from start to finish. The Bulldogs scored 55 first half points and went into the locker room with 21 point lead. The Pirates chipped away in the second half but were eventually overpowered by the Bulldogs. Edmond Memorial went on to win 97-60 and will face Midwest City tomorrow for a state tournament berth.
For analysis on the top performers read below.
Jakolby Long 2016 Mustang Shooting Guard (Signed Iowa State)
Long made it known to many why he is one of the top prospects in Oklahoma. He always has an impact scoring the ball but what he may not get credit for is his ability to rebound the ball. Long may be a guard but he always lingers around the rim and is a big part of mustangs success in transition. When he rebounds the ball they can push immediately rather than a big rebounding and a guard having to come find the ball. Long had 18 points in the victory.
Curtis Haywood 2016 Mustang Shooting Guard
With Haywood still trying to find his collegiate home every performance is critical to his recruitment. He continues to impress with his ability to shoot the ball from distance. He can also put the ball on the floor and attack the rim with his unbelievable athleticism. Haywood finished with 19 and made key free throws to seal the deal.
Jalen Redmond 2018 Midwest City Small Forward
Redmond is built like a middle linebacker and has high flying athleticism. He was a reliable source of offense from start to finish for the Bombers. His ball handling isn’t perfectly polished but he has the ability to drive past bigger defenders. He is a do it all player that impressed on both ends of the floor. Redmond had a team high 20 points.
Keyshawn Embery 2018 Midwest City Point Guard
Embery is one of the few players at this level that has the “it” factor. It was clear from the start that of the game that he to his match ups personally and wanted to rip his opponents heart out. Embery can be a streaky shooter at times. He opened the game missing two technical foul free throws but came back to splash a three-pointer to open the game. Embery got most of his success from attacking the rim and getting to the line. He finished with 14 points.
Richard Anderson 2016 Midwest City Shooting Guard
Anderson have much going from the field purely shooting the ball but was opportunistic. He had many timely offensive put backs that allowed his team keep pace with the Broncos. Anderson had 10 points on the night.
Kristian Doolittle 2016 Edmond Memorial Small Forward (Signed to OU)
Doolittle got anything he wanted tonight from the floor and could’ve had much more had he stayed aggressive and looked for his shot. He has been playing on the wing more lately and although he doesn’t shoot much from out there, Doolittle has the ability to spread the floor and create for others. He left the floor early with 14 points.
Travis Glover 2016 Edmond Memorial Shooting Guard
Glover continues to impress with his ability to be a pure point guard. He has the ability to drive the lane and make plays but often stays patient and finds cutting teammates. Glover can also spot up from deep and stroke the ball. He also had 14 points in limited minutes.
