Guard play has intensified heavily across the state in the 2015-16 season. Many players have served their hours in the gym over the summer and now watch that hard work designate on the floor. The same goes for 2016 Owasso Point Guard Kinzer Lambert who has willed his team to a 15-5 record. Lambert delivers on a nightly basis but does so in an unusual manner.
Lambert is averaging 20.6 points per game and doing so with poise. Last Tuesday night, Lambert poured in a game high 38 points in a one-point win over Bixby. He also hit the game winner earlier in the season in an overtime matchup against Skiatook in the Skiatook Invitational. He has racked up sever accolades in his senior campaign.
Lambert was named to All-Tournament team in the Great 8 Classic. He found himself among elite company as he scored his 1,000th point in a loss versus Union.
In his final season, Lambert has played without superstar Shake Milton who was lost to graduation. As the man at the helm Lambert says he embrace the alpha dog role.
“Shake was obviously a player that got a lot of teams attention defensively opening up the floor to giving us some open looks,” Lambert said. “Now you run into a lot more help defense that wasn’t there in the past. It’s an adjustment but I like the pressure.”
Lambert shows some of the same ability as his former backcourt partner. He has a decent outside shot but often elects to drive and attack the rim. Lambert has a quick first step and is explosive when around the rim. Lambert will surprise you with his great athleticism. He excels at getting to the line and converts at over 90 percent from the free throw line. Lambert says some of his new found explosiveness is due to his time spent in the Adidas Gauntlet with the Oklahoma Wizards.
“Playing in the Gauntlet you get used to playing against guys that are taller, stronger, more athletic,” Lambert said. “When you get back to the high school level it makes it a lot easier having that experience. The game is kind of slowed down.”
Lambert’s strides of improvement haven’t gone unnoticed. Throughout this season he has picked up interest from the University of Central Oklahoma, Midwestern State University, Drury University and Abilene Christian University.
With only the regular season winding down and the playoffs in sight Lambert is expected to make his college decision some time after the season. Lambert is have a fantastic senior season. Don’t be surprised if lower Division I schools get in on the mix.
