Both teams are highly ranked in their respected classes as Northeast came into the game as the #9 team in class 2A and Douglass came in as the #4 team in class 4A. Northeast started the game off with a bang, running out to a quick 12-2 lead on the Trojans.
Douglass came clawing back to within 3 by the 3rd quarter and then it was a dogfight. Northeast was too much for Douglass in the end as they went on to win 46-38. Northeast was lead by Marquis Edwards who had 12 points and Douglass was lead by Coryon Mason with 16 points.
We break down the players below.
Northeast
Marquis Edwards PG 2016
Edwards was by far the best player on the court. Although he only accounted for 12 total points he affected the game in many different areas. At Point Guard he can handle the rock with quickness and confidence.
He can shoot out to the 3-point line as well as finish at the rim. The thing that separates Edwards from the others is how crafty he was with the ball. He was always setting his teammates up for better shots and always finding a way past his defender to get into the lane. Another thing that was impressive was his on ball defense. He was able to get a couple steals towards the end of the game to seal the victory for Northeast.
Richard Gray PF 2016
Gray is a good sized forward who can stretch the floor out to 13 feet. He uses his quick jumping ability to get rebounds and blocks on the defensive end. His motor is what I really liked about him. He was always going for 50/50 balls, and usually winning them.
Lincoln Seward PF 2016
Seward is a long and tall athlete. He can jump with almost anyone in the state and almost had a nasty put back jam in this game. He showed flashes of other skills hitting a couple short jumpers and getting multiple offensive rebounds.
Corey Harrison PG 2016
Harrison is a quick, small guard who can handle the ball very well. He can shoot out to the 3-point line as well as finish in transition.
Armani Norton SF 2016
Norton is a big guard who can finish in the lane and body up any defender you put on him. He has a knack for giving up good shots for finding a better shots. This along with his physical defense makes him a key player for this Northeast squad.
Douglass
Patrick McKaufman SF 2016
McKaufman is a long and athletic wing. On this level he uses his size to get easy shots in the lane, and on the next level it will be his length getting him easy shots. He showed flashes of being able to shoot out past the 3-point line, but had trouble shooting tonight. The only thing I question about him as far as translation to the next level goes is his motor. If he wants to find success in college his motor is going to have to pick up.
Trejion Edwards PG 2017
Edwards is a good ball handler who is adept at getting into the lane. His range can stretch to 3’s, but his main attraction I his ability to get into the lane and create for teammates.
Coryon Mason SG 2017
Mason is a very smart and big guard. He can finish through contact and has a very high IQ. He knows when to attack and when to set up a teammate for a better shot. His defense is physical and opposing players will have a hard time keeping up with Mason the entire game.
