Michigan, Marquette, and Liberty came through to watch workouts. Liberty extended Payton’s first D1 offer. The blossoming guard also attended West Virginia camp last summer.
An ill-timed injury to starting point guard Nate Georgeton opened up playing time for Isaiah Payton.
“Nate Georgeton is a big mentor of his,” said Payton’s father Raymon. “Unfortunately, when Nate went down Ray stepped in. Ray played pretty good. They played a zone (against us). I think he went 4-7 from 3-point range.”
Starting point guard is a big deal for Moeller. Former guards at Moeller include Ken Griffey Jr. (Baseball Hall of Famer), Keith Watkins III (Northwestern FB), Grant Benzinger (Wright State BB), and Byron Larkin.
By the time he graduates, Isaiah Payton will likely have approximately 50 Greater Catholic League starts. It is a demanding Cincinnati-area conference that requires physicality. In his spell stepping in as Georgeton’s replacement, Isaiah Payton has averaged 8.7 ppg, 2.0 apg, and 2.0 topg.
Saturday he set single-game career highs with six made free throws and four rebounds.
The family keeps in contact with Liberty Assistant Coach Kyle Getter on a regular basis.
Because Payton’s minutes were limited earlier this season his recruitment is extremely early, but remember that D1 offer typically sparks copycat recruiters.
