Continue ReadingHeritage Hall the number 1 team in class 3A took on Casady Tuesday night for the last time. The 2 private schools have decided to end the rivalry this season, as the two schools do not plan on playing each other again in the near future.
Heritage Hall has been dominant over the years, but in the previous matchup this season Casady shocked most of the state when they beat the Chargers 59-57.
This game had a different tone though. The last game to be played between the 2 schools was at Casady in Grantham-Griffing Fieldhouse.
Former Casasdy Athletic Director and current Director of Advancement Steve Shelley has been apart of many of the battles.
“It’s just a natural rivalry, geographically,” Steve Shelley said. “The kids live in the same neighborhoods. Both schools really hang their hats on it. The passion that the schools showed today was something rarely seen in sports today.”
When asked what would be missed most about this rivalry he pointed toward the crowd.
“You saw the crowd tonight, you saw the energy tonight, that will be missed,” Shelley said. “There is just no way to make up for this void after 40 plus years.”
Heritage Hall head coach Christopher Hamilton compared the rivalry to Duke and North Carolina.
“You can throw the records out the door,” Hamilton said. “When we see each other its gonna be a tough game. Regardless of the talent level. It’s gonna be an all out war. I’m gonna miss that and I think our kids are gonna miss that.”
The passion the two programs have for this rivalry is easy to see. This rivalry will be missed. Not only by the players, but by every member of the schools.
Heritage Hall would go on to win the contest by a score of 67-57. 2017 Point Guard Omar Boone led the way for the Cyclones with 23 points.
Heritage Hall was led by 2016 guard Calon Woodson with 23 points. Heritage Hall moves to 13-1 on the season as they face Crooked Oak on Friday. Casady had their 13 game winning streak snapped and will look to rebound Friday as they travel to Greenhill.
