2017 El Reno Point Guard Callen Haydon has taken to the floor this year with a vengeance. Haydon and the Indians are at the top of their game finishing with a 5-2 record heading into the Christmas break.
Haydon entered the season as new player and it was evident from the beginning. In scrimmages this preseason he took the floor against Mustang and Putnam City North, two of the states best teams with two of the states best point guards as the opposition. Haydon came out aggressive and set the tone for what has been a tremendous season so far. He is averaging 28 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Haydon was always capable of getting hot from the floor, but this season he has been ultra efficient all while keeping his teammates involved.
Haydon stands at 5’10” he doesn’t have lightening speed, but has a crafty handle and can get to the rim to draw contact. Haydon’s best attribute brought to the floor is his three point shooting. Haydon moves well without the ball, which allows him to get his shot off in a number of ways. Creating for himself off the dribble, pick and pop, or coming of the screen are all ways Haydon uses to fill the stat sheet. Defensively, Haydon plays with his feet and hassles defenders on the perimeter. He also did well in ball denial and shooting passing lanes.
Haydon had a strong performance in his first portion of the season. If he can duplicate or improve on that throughout the New Year, many of the colleges across the state will be forced to take a look at him. Haydon is a player who is well on his way to becoming one of the top players in the class of 2017.
Schools have not reached out to him yet, but could in the near future. Prep Hoops Oklahoma projects Haydon to the Division II level.
