A game that at one point looked like it could turn into a blowout turned highly competitive in the second half, as Pella held on to survive a scare from Grinnell, 65-57, in a key early Little Hawkeye Conference contest.
Pella was hot early, jumping out to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter, with seven different players scoring. The Dutch held a 44-31 lead at halftime, led by Will Warner and his 15 points.
The second half was a different story, as a potent Pella attack was held down, going scoreless for the first six minutes of the third quarter. Grinnell used a 19-6 edge in the third quarter to tie the game at 50 heading to the final period.
Pella started the fourth with a 7-0 run, and made some key plays on the defensive end, taking three charges (Will Warner 2, Ryan Van Wyk 1) at key moments early in the quarter to take back all the momentum that Grinnell had grabbed in the third.
Will Warner led Pella (4-0) with 20 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Donovan Holterhaus was excellent off the bench, contributing eight points and six rebounds. Eight players scored at least four points for the Dutch.
Grinnell (2-2) was led by junior guard Sam Allen, with 21. Brevin Hansen had 12 points on 4-9 shooting from three, and Cade McKnight had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Zaine Leedom had nine points and nine rebounds for the Tigers.
