Kennedy responded with a big run to start the third quarter, seemingly taking control of the game with a 14-7 quarter. The Cougars used their pressure defense to frustrate Washington’s backcourt, creating turnovers and getting easy buckets.
The fourth quarter was all Washington again, as the guards adjusted to pressure, and Laveechie Williams thrived on the interior, scoring eight of his 17 points in the fourth. Washington built up a 10-point lead, 53-43, with 1:50 left to play. A furious Kennedy run pulled the Cougars within 2, 53-51, with 54.5 to play. After a front-end miss by Williams, Kennedy’s Matt Berst had an open look at a corner 3 with 15 seconds left, but it went long. Williams secured the rebound, made a pair at the line, and Washington survived the late rally from their crosstown rival.
Washington (2-2) was led by Keion Wills, with 18 points. Laveechie Williams added 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Ian Thomas had nine points, making several big plays on both ends in the fourth quarter.
Kennedy (2-3) was led by Drake Brewster, who had 18 points. Matt Gardner added 15 and Derrick Diggins had 10.
