The 5-foot-10 point guard will attend Georgia Prep Sports Academy beginning next summer, and says it was a necessary change from Northwestern.
“It (GPSA) felt like home, and it’s the right fit, very family oriented,” said Winkey. “And I felt like when I was at Northwestern it was a big let down. I didn’t play too good, and after I didn’t play too good people started doubting me. So I just got it in my mind that I’m going to work, I’m going to get better and I’m going to get ready for the next level at a prep school.”
“My motivation was people that thinking that I wasn’t going to be where I know I’ve got to be.”
Winkey will bring defensive tenacity to the Lions next season, and predicates his game on shutting down his opponent.
“I like to be a pressure defender, and I love to get my opponent to fear me, and for him to know that I’m going to be his headache all night.,” said Winkey. “And I really like getting by people, and getting into the lane and just taking smart shots. But mostly I just like to be my opponent’s headache because I know if I take the point guard out of the game that his team will have a bad night.”
He played his grassroots ball with the Maryland Tar Heels last summer, and says he’ll head down to Georgia Prep sometime this summer, maybe as late as August – when school starts – if he decides to play grassroots ball in Maryland again.
In the meantime, he’s been working out on his own the past few months since the grassroots season ended, and is trying to play himself into a circuit team this offseason.
“I’ve just been working out, and that’s just about it,” said Winkey who is not playing organized basketball at the moment. “I’m going to try and play on a big circuit this AAU year, and try and get some schools interested in me.”
So far his recruitment has been slow.
“I was talking to University of Montana before their coach moved on to (Oregon State), other than that I’ve just talked to a bunch of prep schools,” said Winkey. “I think my body wasn’t right, coaches saw me and thought I was too small, so I’ve been working on my body a lot, and getting bigger, and I just know I’m going to have a big year.”
