Mason basketball coach Greg Richards has coached plenty of talented players during his 21 years with the Comets.
Junior 6-foot-4 forward Matt King is certainly one of the most versatile players he’s ever coached on the floor. He hadn’t seen a guy run the one and guard the five for the Comets the way King has done. He did that effectively in Tuesday night’s 58-42 win over Cincinnati Sycamore.
“You can’t say enough about his overall play,” Richards said. “…It’s a pleasure to have him for sure do that many multiple things.”
King, who has interest from schools that include NKU, Wright State, Toledo and Findlay, had a game-high 14 points including 5 of 8 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line to lead the Comets (3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Greater Miami Conference).
King is adept at dribbling with his left hand (offhand) and is in good position for rebounding. His defense in the post was excellent on Tuesday.
He also had six rebounds, three blocks and a steal in 26-plus minutes of action.
One of King’s highlights occurred in the first quarter when he drove the baseline for a two-handed slam on the left side.
King smiled when recounting the dunk.
“I saw I could beat my guy baseline and they didn’t have a lot of help defense so I went up and dunked it I guess,” King said.
He then made a swat at the defensive end to help bolster the Comets’ defensive effort. King says he is happy to help at any spot on the floor.
“I think it’s good,” King said. “I think it’s good that coach trusts me to be versatile in playing the one and then being able to guard multiple positions. I think that is key.”
Another highlight occurred with less than six minutes left in the third quarter when King made a steal in the post and drove for an acrobatic shot that went in as he was intentionally fouled. King made the two free throws for what amounted to a four-point play.
King averages 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks for the Comets, who next play at Hamilton Friday.
