One of the state’s blooming prospects, University Heights Academy freshman KyKy Tandy has made it very evident this season that he’s a top prospect in Kentucky’s 2019 class.
The 6-foot-1 guard has just started to gain notoriety after a monster start to his freshman season, but has still seen no recruitment come his way.
He has never played with a high-profile grassroots team, but plans to next offseason, and hopes then his recruitment will take-off.
“Not really anything yet for recruitment, I did get a camp invite from Nike but that’s it,” said Tandy. “I haven’t really played with a major AAU team, but I’m expected to play with one this year.”
The freshman-phenom played with Kentucky Heat in the past, but says he’s likely to play W.A.C.G. All Stars next offseason.
“I feel like if I play with them I could get a lot offers, and it’d be a good experience,” said Tandy, who is not overly concerned with his recruitment just yet.
“I still have four years for all that. But it would be nice to have offers my freshman year.”
Tandy has a Division I lineage in his bloodline, his father played at New Mexico State, and Tandy has learned plenty from him.
“He teaches me a lot,” said Tandy. “And I’ve learned from him throughout my life.”
During the Hopkinsville Holiday Classic, Tandy had his breakout performance, going for a game-high 38 points in a narrow loss to West Creek (TN).
He explained to PHK how he’s he’s been able to be so successful during his freshman season.
“I like to drive to the basket and my strengths are ball-handling and shooting mainly. I feel like I really need to get stronger, and work on my strength. I’m just lifting weights and stuff, and it’ll help me because if I get bumped I won’t fall all the time,” said Tandy.
“My role is to be an all-around player, I need to score, play defense, everything really. I knew as a freshman I was going to be getting some playing time, and I would just have to do what I have to do.”
