Already with Division I offers from Winthrop and Samford, Perry County Central junior Damon Tobler is starting to see some interest from additional schools, and could see his list expand soon.
“I’m seeing interest now from Kent State, Wichita State, and my coach has talked to Coastal Carolina and Furman about me,” said Tobler, who was hearing from Miami of Ohio and Western Kentucky when we talked to him in January.
“I’m not hearing as much as much as a I was (from Western Kentucky), my coach talks to Miami of Ohio a little bit.”
The 6-foot-4 small forward says his recruitment is not on his mind right now, but come his 17U season this spring and summer it will come to the forefront.
“That’s (recruiting) not really the focus right now,” said Tobler. “Right now I’m just worried about every game that we got right now. And then after the season I’ll go into AAU, make some noise, and see what goes on from there.”
Tobler – PHK’s 37th-ranked 2017 – spent his 16U offseason with the EYBL Travelers, and says his jump shot is where he saw most improvement.
“I developed my jump shot, my midrange is where I’m most comfortable with shooting. I’m still working on ball-handling a lot. I’m most comfortable finishing with both hands and shooting a jump shot right now,” said Tobler.
“Ball-handling is where the focus is right now for me, I’ll need to get that better.”
His junior season with the Commodores is now underway, and he says the goal is to be the vocal leader of the team, and to be a proficient scorer and rebounder.
“It’s going to be different from last year because this year we have more scorers. Some goals that I’ve set for myself is to at least average a double-double,” said Tobler. “I’ll need to keep everybody on track, and be the leader, and the voice of the team. I’ll need to go out and give a lot of energy so everybody can feed off of me.”

2017 Perry County guard/forward Damon Tobler is one of the more physically dominant young players in the state. Tobler uses his strength to get rebounds and score around the rim when most players his age wouldn’t be able to. He’s also got a developing perimeter game and has some ability to handle and shoot the ball. He’s a good athlete, but not the quickest, he will have to improved his footwork to become more of a wing player.
Right now Damon has offers from Winthrop and Samford, he also has interest from Western Kentucky and Miami (OH). Damon told me he that while he likes both Samford and Winthrop neither is really standing out at this point and that it’s very early in his recruitment.
Damon mentioned his ball-handling and his jump shot as the two biggest areas of focus when improving his game. It’s clear he’s working to become a more skilled offensive player and that hard work should pay off as he has the natural talents to excel on the perimeter.
Damon described the season at Perry County Central so far as up and down, and feels they’ve lost some games they shouldn’t have. However, he’s positive and thinks his team can make a deep postseason run. “We want to show everybody that we play hard, that we are the same size, that we all gamble and scramble and all that and just do our best out there.”
The best thing I can say about Damon is he’s a true team player, after fouling out last weekend against Taylor County with 5 minutes to go he was on the bench cheering and providing a lot of energy for his teammates that were still fighting. In that same vein he has very simple goals for himself when finishing out his sophomore year. “Just keep my teammates and play hard that’s really it.”
