He did miss the July live periods last summer with a concussion, and that may have had a negative impact on his recruitment, which hasn’t really started up yet. He’s healthy now though, and says he recently may have caught the eye of area Division I programs during some preseason scrimmages.
“My high school coach has told me some colleges are interested in me, he didn’t mention which schools were interested me but I’m pretty sure it’s D1. I think if it was a smaller school he would have told me the name of the school, he doesn’t want my head to get too big. I just need to stay humble,” said Bannister.
The 6-foot-3 small forward is still just a sophomore and he realizes he has plenty of time still make an impression on college programs.
“I’m just focused on becoming a better player, I’m not really worried about the recruitment right now,” said Bannister. “There’s a lot of great players that are playing at high-major schools who didn’t get looked at when they were sophomores. Grayson Allen (Duke) for example, he had no recruitment sophomore year and he worked so hard to make it happen. And that’s my mindset right now; just trust the process, and be patient.”
After spending his spring and summer playing with Mid-Atlantic Select, Bannsiter mentioned that his defense has improved greatly, and his shooting.
“My defense has gotten a lot better and I’ve been a lot more tough on the defensive end,” he said. “My shot has also improved more, it’s starting to get more consistent, and I’m leading my team in 3-pointers right now actually.”
Bannister added: “I really want to continue developing my ball-handling and my finishing skills. I can get to the rim, but I may not always use the right move to finish, so I might not always finish. This upcoming summer and this season I’m just going to work on my ball-handling and making the next step to becoming a shooting guard rather than a small forward.”
Meanwhile, he’s a starting wing with the Colonels, and is averaging 7.2 points and 1.5 made 3s per game.
“I’m getting a lot of crucial minutes, and my role is just to come in play defense, make shots, bring energy to the team,” said Bannister. “And just be a leader out there, even as a sophomore.”
