As PHK’s 14th-ranked 2017, Cole VonHandorf is quickly establishing himself as one of the state’s most sought-after guards.
The 6-foot-2 combo guard currently holds four Division I offers from DePaul, Northern Kentucky, Lipscomb, and Winthrop.
He’s seeing plenty of additional interest.
“I’ve been talking with a lot of coaches and getting mail from; Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Creighton, Belmont, Davidson, Air Force, Xavier – and that’s pretty much it lately,” said VonHandorf.
“I’d probably say Belmont and Notre Dame are after me the most, their coaches have been talking to me, sending a lot of mail and checking in on me.”
The talented guard, who played last offseason with EYBL Travelers, mentioned to PHK what’s important to him when selecting school.
“Obviously academics is important, and then I’ll be looking for a school with a good fan base,” said VonHandorf. “At my high school, we have a great student section, and they’re always ridiculously loud, it really helps us. Also a good relationship with the coach, someone who I can trust will be important too”
The 6-foot-2 point guard went on to define his playing style.
“I like to get other people open shots, also I like to do a lot of pick-and-roll, just come off and shoot or dish or whichever. I’m a shooter, and I worked a lot on my shot over the summer, so it’s really improved.”
VonHandorf added: “I want to continue to improve my court-vision, just seeing everyone, and how everything is flowing.”
He’s been starting with Covington Catholic since his freshman season, and says this season his leadership will have to ramp up.
“Most importantly I’ll need to be a leader, we’re a young team, so I’ll have to lead on and off the court. And we have a lot of scorers, so really I’ll have to control the team and get my guys open shots,” said VonHandorf.
“I’d like to average over 20 points per game, and I’d like to shoot over 40 percent from 3-point, shoot over 90 percent from the free-throw line, and lead my team to another state championship.”

2017 Covington Catholic combo guard Cole VonHandorf has consistently been one of the top 2017 players in the state during both grassroots and high school basketball. The 6’1” guard can play on or off the ball and has the best mid-range game in the state. He’s very smooth all around and can do a little bit of everything. He’s not the most athletic kid, but his basketball IQ and skill level are so high that it often doesn’t matter. He’s easily a division I player and could play at the mid major or low major level right away in my eyes.
DePaul, Winthrop, Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb have all offered Cole and he is also being recruited by Creighton, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Belmont, Pepperdine and Notre Dame. He doesn’t have any visits planned at this moment, but has previously visited several schools. He’s looking for a college with a great atmosphere and a passionate fan base and he also wants to build a close relationship with the coaching staff of his future college.
Cole describes himself as a smart and crafty shooter and is hoping to continue to improve his ball-handling and three point shooting. Cole doesn’t have many flaws in his game, so his main focus for the rest of his career will be keeping all his skills sharp and trying to improve his body, athleticism, quickness, etc.
Covington Catholic will again be one of the top teams in the state and that is in large part due to the return of Cole. He’s arguably the best player in the 9th region and has been a starter in high school since he was in 8th grade. He says the goal for Covington Catholic remains to win another state title, which on paper seems very realistic. He said they need to play harder and smarter than every team they play, because they’re usually not the most athletic team out there. Personally he’s hoping to continue to play at a high level and hopefully he can snag a few more offers as well.
