12/2: #7 Covington Catholic at Cooper: This sould be a really good one as Cooper is the second best team in the 9th region. Plus both Sean McNeil and Cole VonHandorf are player of the year candidates in the region. I expect Covington Catholic to win this one, but I think Cooper keeps it close as the Colonels beat the Jaguars by about 8.
12/3: #22 Bryan Station at #3 Paul Laurence Dunbar: Two of the top teams in Lexington square off. Dunbar is the favorite to win the region, but DeAndre Dishman may be the best player in Lexington. If Dontell Brown can slow Dishman down effectively I expect Dunbar will win, if Dishman gets going expect a Bryan Station upset.
12/4: #6 Mercer County vs. #20 South Laurel (at North Laurel): Mercer County was tremendous this summer and added sharpshooter Dylan James after that. They feature arguably the best 2016, 2017 and 2018 prospects in the 12th region with James, Will Hager and Trevon Faulkner. However, South Laurel has a great one-two punch in Jared Grubb and Caleb Taylor. If Taylor can stay out of foul trouble I expect South Laurel to keep this game close, however I think Mercer County wins this game.
12/4: #8 Central at #18 Eastern: Two of the top teams in the 7th region and the city of Louisville all together. 2016 Central G/F Dai’Von Thompson may be the front-runner for 7th region player of the year. Meanwhile the 2017 Eastern class is loaded and ready to make a run at a regional crown led by 6’5″ wings Caleb Williams and Chance Moore. Central presses and plays up-temp and Eastern has two solid point guards to help handle that and they have player who can guard Thompson. With Eastern playing at home I think they pick up a hard fought victory.
12/4: Doss at #17 Fern Creek: Fern Creek is the talk of the 6th region, along with Bullitt East, and feature a lot of great guard play along with some length and athleticism at the post spots. Ahmad Price and Tony Washington could both win 6th region player of the year. However, Doss has reloaded with transfers after losing some players to graduation and transfer. Kelshawn Knight-Goff, Cam Maddox and Kenyi Bryant are impact guys all with size and athleticism. Add in returners Stephon Franklin and Jaylon Hall. I think Doss gives the Tigers a run for their money, but I’m not convinced they have the depth at this point to get the W.
12/5: #4 Bullitt East vs. Elliott County (at Shelby County): The preseason 6th region favorite led by the 16th region champ from a year ago. 2019 G Korbin Spencer is one of the best freshmen in the state and it should be interesting to see if the young guns can give the experienced Chargers a run for their money. Bullitt East wins by double digits in the end.
12/5: #19 Owen County vs. #20 South Laurel (at North Laurel): Owen County is my favorite to win the 8th region and this game with the inside duo of Carson Williams and big Mike Dunaway. They also have solid guard play in Vince Toftness and Chad McDonald. Owen County by about 12.
12/5: #14 Ballard vs. #22 Bryan Station (at Shelby County): Ballard lost a ton from last season, but they’re always talented and bring back stud 2017 PG Jamil Wilson. Ballard will need to reload like usual and have guys like Clivonte Patterson, Dorion Tisby, etc. step up to be successful this season. This will be an early test and I think they’ll pass it with a close 5 point win.
