Over the past week Prep Hoops Oklahoma has introduced the 2017 Sleeper series. Today we wrap up the series with Norman North 2017 Power Forward Winston Nelson topping the list.
Many are aware of the great talent at Norman North with Trae Young, Lindy Waters III, Marcus Dickinson, and Cameron Martin all holding multiple Division I offers. One player that gets overshadowed at Norman North is Winston. Standing at 6'7″ Nelson is tough to handle inside.
Nelson showed great improvement this summer on the grassroots circuit. The most notable improvement in his game is the confidence he plays with on the floor. At times Nelson was timid a season ago, but this summer he matured on the hardwood.
Physically Nelson has gotten stronger, quicker, and has grown into his body. Over the summer Nelson improved his ball handling skills, jump shot, and ability to guard quicker opponents.
The new confidence Winston possesses makes him a scoring threat on offense. The improved jump shot of Nelson allows him to face defenders up and have the option to shoot over them or drive to the hoop. The enhanced handles of Nelson enable him to drive to the basket with ease.
Nelson won't have the spotlight at Norman North this next season, but will play a key role in the Timberwolves quest for the Class 6A Gold Ball. In the paint Nelson will do a lot of the dirty work that does not always show up in the stat sheet. The heart Nelson plays with sets him apart from many.
The basketball court is not the only place Nelson thrives at Norman North. In the classroom Nelson dominates, he is number one in his class, and has a 28 on his ACT. Keep in mind Nelson is number one in his class, outpacing over 650 other students at Norman North.
Nelson has attracted a couple of IVY league programs with his academics and skills on the hardwood. The work ethic Nelson has on and off the court separate him from the pack. Nelson is set for a huge junior campaign at Norman North. He has one goal in mind, win the state championship.
Nelson tops the list of 2017 Sleepers. He has a chance to turn into a special prospect. Keep an eye on the development of Nelson over the next two years at Norman North.
