Expert Analysis
William Lloyd III | Prep Hoops Scout
Middleton has shown real smoothness to his game early in the season. He’s come off the bench and made an immediate impact, doing a good job running the second unit and keeping the point guard position steady once the starters get a break. He can quickly he can change the tempo of a game, whether that means pushing pace, getting into the paint, or creating early offense for his teammates. He plays with quickness and feel, and he’s comfortable getting inside and making the right reads rather than forcing his own shot. Middleton has looked like a young guard who understands how to manage the game and keep things organized, which is a big reason his value may continue to rise.

in a boot and on crutches, Middleton’s number got called once again this season to jump in as the starting point guard in arguably their biggest game of the season. I was impressed with how poised he was against a one of the better backcourt duos in the region. He did a nice job of handling pressure, establishing paint touches, and making good reads that resulted in seven assists in his 17 minutes of play

-I always love when a prospect doesn’t let his offense dictate his intensity at the defensive end of the floor. Playing in a pretty crowded group of upperclassmen guards, Middleton has carved out a nice niche as a 2-way PG that can put pressure on the rim at the offensive end of the floor and get into his matchup’s airspace at the opposite end. His ability to anticipate and get over the top of ball screens both in the middle of the floor and in the slot gave Spalding a nice boost in spurts to keep ballhandlers outside of the 3 point line. Middleton is also usually in the right place as a helper and does a good job of forcing turnovers without fouling, both of which are encouraging indicators of long term success at the PG position.

-Middleton has caught the eye of our scouts several times this offseason as a flashy floor general that has a ton of perimeter wiggle and floor vision. His advanced handle allows him to beat his matchup to his spots but also to smoothly bring the ball from the floor to his shooting pocket to either execute a pass or find his own offense on drives to the basket. His ability to break down his matchup off the bounce whether he is at the top of the key or coming off a ball screen should allow him to begin earning time in a crowded Spalding backcourt because of his ability to set the table for his teammates.

-Middleton had a productive weekend in some new threads with DC Premier . He’s an extremely effective creator in the half court that used several Steve Nash drives along the baseline to create the spacing to deliver some beautiful dimes to set up his teammates well for buckets. He plays with a stop and go pace that really throws his defenders off their rhythm, causing them to over-balance before he crossed over to get downhill to create advantage situations for his team. The skill level was also on display on several floaters and knock down jumpers from outside the arc. Really intriguing blend of talents, should be the next PG up for Spalding.
