was finding success getting into his pull-up jumper, as he gets good elevation and only needs a little bit of space to step into his shot and rise up from mid-range. Both off the catch and dribble, Romelle was getting good looks to elevate and knock down shots from mid-range and three. Bell has a strong frame as a guard that allows him to compete on the glass against bigger players and should help him translate defensively at the next level. Had a strong senior season scoring 20 ppg for Hiawatha as they played a challenging non-conference schedule.

Unfortunately Romelle went down with an injury with about five minutes to play in the first half, but I think his play leading up to then was worthy of a mention. Matched up against a top-100 ranked guard, Romelle held his man to just 2 points in the first 13 minutes while also scoring 7 of his own. He has such a physically strong frame at 6’2, so he has no problem defending the paint but can also move his feet on the perimeter. Offensively Hiawatha uses him a ton out of the high post where they run guys off of him and he can make the decision to hand it off, face up and shoot, or face up and attack the basket. So dangerous because of his ability to knock down pull-up jumpers or power his way to the rim and finish.

Romelle has had an impressive start to his senior campaign. He’s more toned and explosive than he was last year, while still possessing the strength to bully opposing guards once he gets to the basket. Against Roosevelt he was dangerous catching in the high post and facing up where he had the options to elevate for a mid-range jumper, or jab and attack the rim. Bell had success scoring from all over the floor with his ability to shoot off the catch or dribble, and he also threw down a dunk in transition. Defensively he can move his feet with guys his height, but also has no problem guarding forwards a few inches taller because he can hold his ground and limit their low-post touches. Really good rebounder as a guard as well. Finished with 28 points and scored his 1,000th point in the process.

Had it not been for their free throw struggles in the second half, Hiawatha would have had a good chance to push this game down to the wire, if not win it. A big reason why was the scoring ability and toughness on the glass of Romelle. I talked about

‘s mid-range ability, and Romelle’s is right up there. He was excellent at catching at the high post or top of the key, facing up, and then elevating into a 15 foot jumper if his defender was sagging off. Because of how strong and physical he is, he can bully most guards around the basket. This caused North to guard him with size, and Romelle utilized his quickness to get into space and just knock down the open jumper repeatedly. On the glass he’s quick to find a body to boxout, and has strong hands to secure the ball. Finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds against the Class AA power.

Romelle has a blend of physical attributes and skills that you don’t see often. He has the size of a guard and can certainly handle the ball like one, but he’s also extremely strong and can play like a power forward around the basket with his ability to bully defenders. Bell was very dangerous catching in the high post and facing up with a number of options on how to put points on the board. He can turn and hit the mid-range shot, attack all the way to the basket, find a teammate cutting to the rim, or dribble into a post up. Once at the basket he’s just too strong for most high school defenders to contain, and he was able to power his way to the rim for 18 points. Added in 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals in the tough loss.
