Simmons proved to be an instrumental factor in what was a near-miraculous comeback effort by 4A James Island against a 4A SCISA team in Porter-Gaud. He finished his evening with 15 points even though his team did not get the result it desired in a 64-60 decision to the Cyclones. Simmons did have a highlight play at the end of the contest as he drained a buzzer-beating three which trimmed the Trojans’ margin of defeat from seven to four – Porter-Gaud had a double-digit lead midway through the fourth quarter. Simmons displayed the veteran instincts, vocal leadership, leadership by example and overall fearless play that has made him one of the state’s premier players – and why he will be a force to be reckoned with in the collegiate ranks once he graduates following this season.

RJ is one of the quickest guards in the entire state. He showcases this in the open court, in the half-court offense, and in on-ball defense. Simmons’s speed puts pressure on defense every possession, but when you pair it with his Basketball IQ it makes for a nightmare for the opposition.

RJ played this past season at James Island HS after starting off at Cathedral Academy in North Charleston. Simmons a combo guard was able to get to his spots here today with the ball in his hands. He touched the paint and looks to penetrate – kick to open players on the floor.
RJ will at times take some tough shots on the floor and they come out to be makes in the end.

Simmons will be at James Island this season after winning a SCISA Class 1A State Championship at Cathedral Academy last season. RJ really lets the game come to him and always feels very composed on the hardwood.
Simmons can play both positions in the backcourt and generally can score the ball at will at times. RJ has no problems creating his own scoring opportunities on the floor and along for his teammates.

Simmons made the move down to James Island HS here late this summer. RJ helped Cathedral Academy win a SCISA Class 1A State Championship last season. He was able to drop 44 points in the game vs Clarendon Hall last season.
RJ can create his own shot along with creating for his teammates. He’s a crisp passer that never really looks to force the issue on both ends of the floor. He keeps the ball close to floor and rarely ever turns it over.
