Wright has been on a tear in summer league play at Edmond Memorial. The Newcastle forward is averaging 23 points and 7 rebounds so far. Against Mustang, his 26 points led the way for his squad. Owen was able to make plays both inside and outside of the arc. His effort and length allowed him to grab multiple offensive rebounds in which he was able to convert second shot opportunities in the paint. His ability to put the ball down and get to the cup continues to improve. Wright showed that he can eat up ground with his length and finish above the rim after attacking closeouts. The sophomore also had it working from outside, hitting two 3-pointers against the Broncos. Owen was also effective inside when posting up and operating in the pick-and-roll. He loves to work over his left shoulder and was consistently finishing over and around defenders.

Wright put on a tremendous display of versatility at the UA Rise Circuit Session 1 Event. Against NBBA Elite Norcal, the Newcastle standout provided 21 points, seven rebounds and a block. At 6’7″, he continues to add to his game, shooting 3-6 from long range for his i4 Basketball club. Wright really loves the corner spots as a floor spacer and has combined this recently with relentless effort as an offensive rebounder. Owen is very comfortable in the mid-post and has also shown the ability to get to his spots via the dribble before elevating over smaller players.

The Newcastle youngster was limited in practice while recovering from a concussion, but has already made his mark with a weekend over double digit averages at the Circuit in Dallas. His upside is obvious, with good movement for his height. Especially as he might still be growing. While continuing to add strength and dominating the interior will be key for his long term success. Don’t sleep on his ability to step out and hit jumpers as a stretch forward. Expect his high school production to flourish this winter, as he helps Newcastle defend the 5A crown.

Big man with perimeter range. Does good work on the low block, and also out to 8-10 feet with cleanly catching and quickly getting his shot up. But possibly his best trait is how smooth he looked as a spot up threat. The quicker he develops this winter, the more dangerous the Racers become as a floor spacer who still gives them a major height advantage over 5A teams.

As a 5A title contender, Wright might not make the production jump similar to others on the list. But to reach State and capture Gold, it requires depth and all hands on deck. Enter the intriguing, tall sophomore. With an experienced group around him, the role should be simple for Wright. Hit the glass. Hit the occasional three to spread the floor. And hustle. All those traits are in Wright’s bag.
If he’s successful in staring in that role, expect the wins and personal highlights to follow. And set the stage for Wright to be a dynamic and skilled force as an upperclassman.
