Expert Analysis
Jay Anderson | Prep Hoops Scout
Graves led the Bishop McGuinness backcourt in more ways than one in their run in the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs. He put together a strong month of March which included two triple-doubles including 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in their Sweet 16 victory over North Rowan. He’s a crafty guard who makes things happen when the ball comes his way. He’s a Kenyon College commit who’s really turned things up a notch over the past few months of the high school season.

. Like his brother, Nick stands at 6’1”, and is an athletic combo guard who is an elite scorer and high IQ guy. He’s a knockdown three-point shooter who knows how to find his spots on and off the ball. Graves is active off the ball and is constantly scanning the court for back door cuts and pin downs to curl off of and get up a good shot. What is most impressive with his game is his shot selection. Despite being one of the best three-point shooters in his class, Graves is patient with his shot and has puts up quality looks whenever he can.

This kid continues to be an outstanding player, both at the high school level and grassroots, where he put together another great spring with perimeter bombs galore. As mentioned, he’s a knockdown shooter that spaces well and just takes the right shot, no chucking or wild shots in his game. He’s also shown his ability to be a point guard, facilitating and dictating the offense for his teammates. He can score it against just about anybody, and he should quickly become a college-level target for coaches over the rest of the summer.

Graves is poised to become a big part of the Bishop McGuinness rotation this year, and has had a big summer competing in grassroots action. Like seemingly many others in the NC Spartans program, he’s a deadeye shooter who made defenders pay all summer when he was left alone from beyond the arc. In addition to his shooting, he’s smooth with the ball in his hands, dicing up defenses and making the right reads consistently. He posted efficient numbers all summer and limited making careless decisions, meaning should continue to do the same at high school level. With that, what is there not to like about a ball handling guard who makes good reads and shoots it at a high clip?
