Expert Analysis

Calhoun had his best performance of the weekend in a win over George Rogers Clark as his slashing ability was on full display against the defending state champs. Calhoun played well off two feet and can knock down shots off the catch. A fearless driver, Calhoun wants to get into the teeth of the defense and isn’t afraid to go up in traffic over tall defenders. Calhoun already burst onto the varsity scene last season and will be a featured player on a Male team that will be one of the younger groups in Kentucky next season but they have a handful of Division I targets on their team including Calhoun.

Stepping into a fantastic situation as a freshman at Louisville Male. Mason Calhoun Mason Calhoun 6'0" | PG Louisville Male | 2030 KY was facing pressure against the Fishers backcourt that he probably has never seen before, and he rose to the occasion. Tempo pushing guard that didn’t get sped up. As a young guard, he showed the ability to handle the pressure and get the offense set up as well as get in the lane and create shots himself and others.

Mason will enter his freshman season next year as one of KY’s most experienced 2030 athletes. His mature output in the 7th Region quarterfinals wasn’t reflective of his age. Mason was the second-leading scorer for the Bulldogs (13 PTS) in the decisive matchup in addition to securing a team-high 7 REB. With guts of steel, he gave Male a shot at the win by nailing a 3PT FG to tie the game with less than twenty seconds left in overtime. Much respect to the young prospect who seems to have a big future ahead of him.

An eighth grader making an impact on varsity, Calhoun was confident on the ball and made multiple plays as a dribble driver in this game. Getting to his spots and hitting shots in the floater and mid-range area. A name to know for the future, Calhoun should add weight and muscle to his frame over the next couple of years and become one of the best guards in Louisville as an upperclassman if he continues to work.

Male is one of the top teams in the state this season and Calhoun has already shown he’s ready for the battles of playing in the 7th region every night out. Shooting 40% from three while handling a lot of the ball handling duties for the Bulldogs, Mason is carving out a nice role for himself for Coach Haworth and seems to be among the top 8th graders in the city of Louisville.
