Expert Analysis
Victor Taylor | Prep Hoops Scout
Smith has continued to torch the nets in the way we’re familiar with, as the senior is averaging 30.1 points per game on the season. He’s a smooth combo guard who can make plays for others, but has mostly looked to get his own buckets the entire season. He does it in a variety of ways, including pouring in over 3 threes a game. He’ll look to vanquish conference foes West Stokes in the first round of the state playoffs this week.

Smith has a flamethrower and can score from anywhere inside half court, as evidenced by his performances at Morehead HS all season long. He’s averaging 30.9 PPG and can knock down the three ball, make moving shots in the mid-range or get to the rim with relative ease. He played well with PSB Elite last summer, so it is surprising that he still doesn’t have any offers that we’re aware of. Someone who is their school’s all time scorer and the 2nd leading scorer of all time in his county behind Breon Pass should be off the board soon.

Smith just continues to torch the nets this year, as he had 34 and 25 in two wins over good teams this week. He made 10 total threes and 19 total free throws, showing how his game is predicated on taking and making shots all over the court. He has a particularly impressive talent of drawing fouls and making teams pay as he takes and makes a lot of free throws on the entire year, which showcases a game mature for the college level. A capable scorer who fills it up and should be making a college commitment soon.

He’s a sizeable name who can operate in the painted area very well as evidenced by his 45 percent shooting percentage. As he shows he can be a consistent perimeter threat, look for his name to grow among DII programs in the region.

Last Season Stats – 34.8 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 224 FGM
The leading scorer in the state regardless of class or association, Smith is returning for his senior season to showcase his gifted scoring and creation abilities. He can score it at all three levels with ease which has been known for a while. However, he’s a great facilitator also, with his immense gravity opening up spots for his teammates and he knows how to be unselfish when the time requires. He should be a coveted prospect for D2/D3 schools as an unsigned senior.

Makel Smith Makel Smith 6'1" | CG Morehead | 2024 State NC is quite the prolific scoring guard to keep an eye on out of Morehead High. He had himself a very point-filled junior campaign as he led the state in scoring with 34.8 ppg to go along with 6.9 rpg, 2.9 apg and 2.2 spg on 45 percent shooting from the field and 38 percent from 3-point land. He’s a wiry guard that knows how to get to his spots on the floor and make things happen in space. He also does well on the rebounding and playmaking front as well. He’ll be a name to keep an eye on this grassroots cycle with PSB Elite ‘s 17U squad out of the 704 area.

Makel Smith Makel Smith 6'1" | CG Morehead | 2024 State NC has been putting up absurd numbers up north this year at Morehead HS, averaging 37.5 PPG. He’s an incredibly dynamic guard who scores at every spot on the floor and takes over games. He’s a volume guy who is shooting to get hot, and shooting to stay hot. Averaging over 5 threes a game shows he’s not one to leave open, but you have to balance that with letting him get inside, where he converts at over 50% from the field and 80% from the stripe. He’s a multidimensional problem, and we’ll be hearing much more about him as he leads his 11-1 Morehead team towards the playoffs.
