Expert Analysis
Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
O’Connell, a guard out of the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, looks ready to break out at this level with his ability to knock down shots off of dribble penetration by his teammates. The 6’5″ guard is a good athlete that elevates into his jumper, allowing him to get it off against almost any opponent. He’s quickly developed nice chemistry with New Hampton’s lead ball-handlers and should thrive off their ability to get paint touches and then spray it out to the perimeter. Opponents have to respect his athleticism and ability to make plays off the bounce, which should only enhance his perimeter shooting.

O’Connell, a guard out of the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, makes his first appearance in the 2029 rankings at #15 and comes in as the #4 ranked combo guard. The 6’5″ lefty is in the early mix as one of the top perimeter shooters in this class and should thrive playing off of New Hampton’s elite lead guards this winter. He’s got a quick, high release on his jumper and while his shooting pops, he’s also a plus athlete that can make plays above the rim as a slasher. He uses his length to his advantage defensively, knows how to play angles in passing lanes, and should contribute on the glass as he adds strength.

Whether curling off screens, cutting to the corner, or floating into open space in transition, his movement constantly created problems for opposing defenses and generated clean perimeter looks.

O’Connell, a sophomore guard out of Bedford High School, is ready to have a breakout season. He had a terrific spring and summer and looks poised to impact games with his basketball IQ, feel as a creator, and multi-level scoring ability. He averaged 4.7 points per game last winter on a really good Bedford team, but should take on more of an on-ball role this season. He plays at his own pace, sees the floor well, and has the ability to deliver passes on time and on target to teammates in scoring positions.
