About Layton
Expert Analysis
Spencer Christenson | Prep Hoops Scout
Smith had a really nice game and was highly efficient. He scored 14 points (6/8 FG) and didn’t really need to possess the ball much to get his points. He had a couple catch-and-shoot threes that I remember. The ball doesn’t stick with Layton and he’ll make a quick decision with the ball and keep the ball moving. Layton scored the game-winning tip-back off the offensive glass in the closing seconds.

I’m unsure of the specifics of Smith’s injury and his recovery, but he’s wearing a sleeve on his knee. He’s also with Sanford’s 17U White team and seems to be coming along with every tournament. He’s an all-around athlete, excelling in football and track as well. I did see he had collected NAIA football offers. On the basketball court, his 6’4” length is useful on the defensive side, especially protecting and challenging opponents at the rim. A key piece to Lennox’s squad that wasn’t at full strength in terms of health last season. I wouldn’t say he improved his stock, but he didn’t damage it either. A steady player with vertical ability and length from the wing.

Layton got better and more impactful on the game as the game went on. Good size, was boarding the ball and getting to the rack for finishes. He was one of the top performers and most consistent prospects for Lennox.

This Oriole can fly! Smith placed 2nd at State T&F in the high jump in his freshman year and this spring (soph) he placed 4th at State. You know a kid is athletic when he places at State as a frosh & soph. On the hardwood, Smith is a blow-by slasher and a bouncy above-the-rim-finisher. Layton is tough to keep in front, he is very athletic and elusive when penetrating. Smith can also soar to the rim and hammer it!

He has a ton of potential with a high ceiling. Smith can basically get to the rim whenever he wants. He has no trouble weaving his way through the defense. It is nearly impossible for one defender to keep Mr. Smith out of the lane. Layton has improved his shot from the three-point arc. His dunking/slamming/whamming is impressive and it will catch your eye. The Orioles are loaded with talent and Smith will be a player to keep tabs on.
