Expert Analysis
Scott Hankamp | Prep Hoops Scout
Bascom is just such a nightmare of a matchup for opposing coaches. He’s too versatile. The power and footwork combination is nothing shy of special. If you try to matchup Bascom with athleticism, he can slow you down and use his frame. If you try to match power, he’ll face rim and shoot or find space. Bascom’s defense will be key as well as these teams had a defensive battle a month and a half ago.

Bascom was so impressive at the DZone Showcase on Monday. I continue to love his versatility. He showed that he could attack the glass as a high level rebounder and finisher. But Bascom also ran the floor with ease and was a threat facing the rim and working off a power 2 dribble tale.

Bascom is such a solid well rounded player. He can score in such a wide variety of ways and all at a high percentage. Bascom can finish with a 2 handed flush under the rim as well as step outside and bury a triple. And really could hit a jumper from anywhere in between.

– Corner 3 = range
– Multi level scorer – backed down defender and flip in
– Put back dunk
– Rare size-strength-skill ombo
– Might be MVP of the event – that’s how impressive

Bascom was outstanding all weekend. He put up nice numbers, but almost nothing was or looked forced, which is especially impressive in grassroots basketball. Bascom saw the floor and made smart decisions with the ball. He was a true multi level scorer.

I’ve now seen Jake play on two separate occasions over the past few months, in the regional semifinal against Flint C-A and this weekend in Grand Rapids. He has a couple skills I don’t see much of. First, is his effectiveness after he grabs a rebound. He’s so good at getting a board and efficiently throwing a quality outlet pass to start the break. However, he doesn’t need to always give it up. I didn’t see a player all weekend that had the ability to grab a contested rebound, then confidently take 2-3 dribbles to escape pressure, before passing it up the floor. Bascom is also a highly skilled passer for his size. He makes difficult passes like the shovel or the 1-arm cross-court look easy. The unique combination of size, strength, and intangibles that Jake possesses makes him an intriguing prospect to watch this spring & summer.

Bascom was with his Rockford teammates at Grand Valley State University. I don’t have stats for the game, but I don’t need them. He passed the eye test with flying colors. Basocom looked comfortable and confident on both ends of the floor. He showed improved athleticism and a nose for the rim.
