A high motor athlete who excelled at getting into the lane, Murphy’s slashing was actually second to his versatility as a defender. He showed the instincts off-ball to dig out the ball helper and to shoot the gap on passes. Murphy also displayed the lateral mobility and arm length to be disruptive on-ball. And once he got the steal, it was showtime in transition. Without the need for a ton of space, he applied constant pressure on the rim off-the-catch and off the muscle.

As a guard who can play on or off-ball, Murphy impacts winning regardless of whether or not he’s scoring. But he would benefit from either shooting the ball better spotting up or improving his on-ball decision-making.

Murphy was a revelation with his play on Monday night, bringing nonstop energy and efficient production while helping steer the narrow win in Middletown’s offseason opener. A sturdy guard with good size and budding athleticism, he was under control but persistently aggressive looking to attack downhill. He drove with pace and showed the ability to finish strong and athletically through contact, also contributing as a secondary ballhandler and smart open-floor playmaker. Murphy has the physical tools to eventually carry his downhill attack over to the scholarship level, but we’ll look for him to show in future evaluations that he can keep defenses honest with his jump shot as well.

A smooth operator with the ball for Team Delaware, Murphy is equally physical. He drives to make plays for his teammates first and to score second. But when he does call his own number, he can absorb contact, draw the foul, and make the free throw.
