Expert Analysis
Bobby Lopez | Prep Hoops Scout
Van Matre’s rise in the rankings is fueled by the combination of a productive high school season and an eye opening start to the AAU circuit. Averaging 12.6 points and 5.5 rebounds, he showed steady impact, but his recent play has elevated the conversation around his game. What stands out is his versatility—he has the ability to score at all three levels, showing touch from the perimeter, comfort in the mid range and the strength to finish inside. The flashes are becoming more consistent, and that growth is turning potential into production. Defensively his positioning and instincts allow him to anchor and stabilize the floor, giving his team a reliable presence. As he continues to build on this momentum, Van Matre is clearly trending upward

Van Matre really delivered and showed he’s the real deal with a dominant all around performance. He was involved in everything, impacting the game on both ends while consistently making winning plays. Offensively he proved to be a true three level scorer, knocking down shots, attacking the mid range and finishing strong at the rim. His ability to play above the rim added another dimension, especially in transition. Once he got downhill he became a force, using his strength and athleticism to overwhelm defenders. Van Matre’s energy, versatility and production made him one of the most impactful players all tournament long. He cemented himself as a top prospect in his class with the dominant showing

Van Matre looked like one of the most complete players in the gym all weekend. The game slows down for him, and he impacts it in multiple ways. He rebounds well, pushes in transition, finishes creatively around the basket, and makes the right reads. The passing is what really separates him for me. Despite scoring with ease, he consistently created for others and played within the flow. Van Matre has good size, great feel, and a mature approach. He was dominant and looked like a top-tier prospect that we’re extremely high on right now.

was a relentless scorer who never gave up when shots weren’t falling initially. Tallying 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists, Van Matre’s perseverance was on full display. The second-ranked forward in the 2028 class distributed the rock while pinpointing his teammates, which resulted in more ball movement for the Knights. At 6’5, Van Matre was able to gain an extra step on defenders and weave past opponents with ease. Being a catalyst for Fairview, he’ll strive to translate his effort into his second-round matchup against a top-ranked, gritty Chaparral squad Friday night.

Gus is a player who saw a big rise in the last ranking due to his play. He’s a 6’5 forward who can also put the ball on the floor and expand the defense with his 3-point shooting at times. He got off to an incredible start to the season, went through a tough patch right after the break, but looks to be back in a rhythm and playing well. He’s finished with double figures in the last 5 games, has been a force on the boards, who is grabbing the boards and starting the break, getting out in transition and finishing, and forcing defenses to pay attention to him. We do want to see him hold that consistency and continue being a force on both ends of the floor. He has a high ceiling; we want to see him reach it, but it was not a bad month for him.

Through 6 games, Gus is a Top-10 scorer in the class at 17.5 points a game. But he has 6.7 rebounds to go along with it. He’s the team’s best player, and he’s been filling it up. He’s a 6’5 all-around player who can score both inside and out. He’s 14-30 from deep, finishes with ease inside, and attacks mismatches. He shows a polished game, while being the primary scorer and player whom teams key in on, and that has not slowed him down. Gus has had games of 32 points, 21 points, and a game of 24 points and 15 rebounds, and those were all in wins. He’s one of the biggest risers in the entire class as he went from a prospect on the watch list to now in the Top-15. Huge rise for him.

does his best work with the

, where his 6’2 frame and inside-out scoring ability shine. He’s a confident shooter from deep and a physical finisher in traffic. He brings versatility to the wing spot, and that allows him to have his moments where he dominates. If he brings that same energy and shot-making to Fairview, expect him to carve out a varsity role this season. Finish off the year strong and get ready for a solid sophomore campaign.
