Perhaps one of the more intriguing prospects amongst the entire group, Gavin Gerckens Gavin Gerckens 6'9" | PF/C Southern Regional | 2027 State NJ may not be receiving the attention he deserves just quite yet, however he did leave this year’s Expo having established himself as a name worth monitoring moving forward. Gerckens has the makings of a uniquely versatile skillset at both his size and position— moving with rather rare fluidity and smooth footwork at his measurables, where his soft touch around the basket translates to efficient interior finishing, whether as an impactful offensive rebounder generating additional scoring chances, rolling fast and hard out of ball screens, banana cutting in the short corner area to convert on dump offs from penetrating guards, and even as a rim runner for athletic above the rim finishes. Complementing his interior presence are intriguing flashes of perimeter skill— with the ability to pull opposing bigs away from the paint as an outside shooter paired with his ability to corral rebounds and initiate offense in transition and handle the basketball in the open floor.

Gerckens went up five spots in the update and will be looking to be one of the top post prospects in the Shore Conference this season. The 6’9 post elevates for dunks in the half court and has a nice touch around the rim. Gerckens uses his strong frame to get position in the paint and is an underrated passer. He is a force on the glass and influences a ton of shots around the rim. Gerckens is a physical post prospect who should rack up double-doubles throughout the winter.

Gerckens ability to space the floor was seen throughout the game I evaluated of him. He has good size and is able to take advantage of slower defenders who can’t get out quick enough to cover him on the perimeter with his quick draw release. His game is very smooth.

One of only a few true bigs in attendance, Gerckens acquitted himself well to the wide-open camp style of play while showing a well-rounded offensive skillset of his own in the process. Flowing smoothly between the interior and perimeter, Gerckens showed a strong feel for the game as both a cutter and facilitator. His soft hands and touch allowed him to finish inside with efficiency while he also flashed comfort as a ballhandler that could point to upside left to tap into in the years to come. While a bit awkward at times, Gerckens’ intersection of size, skill, feel, and strong academics should make him a commodity among coaches at the D3 level moving forward.
