Edwards comes in one slot behind Martin after an impressive senior season at Catonsville and despite his team’s success being up and down for a variety of reasons, the explosive 6-foot-1 combo guard’s dynamic playmaking was the catalyst for much of the positivity that occurred this season. His quick burst allowed for frequent visits to the rim where he can finish with authority. He posed as a lob threat in transition and while he may have been shorthanded with frontcourt teammates that could consistently finish around the bucket, Edwards showcased vision and sound processing skills as a passer. He poses as a great prep or JuCo candidate that could have serious upside in the right developmental program. Edwards made a 7-spot rise from No. 42 to No. 35.

20p 6r 5a 5b vs New Town; 33p 7a 6r 2b 4s 13/18 FG 5/8 3P vs Centennial
-One of the more dynamic scoring point guards left on the market, Edwards impressed in both Catonsville playoff games that I saw this past week. Edwards uses a pretty lethal first step to get past his man and into the teeth of the defense but his vertical leaping ability allows him to not only finish through contact but also detonate above the rim. His timing and quickness off the floor also allow him to be a pretty elite shot-blocker at the point guard spot that’s capable of contesting shots on the ball and protect the rim as a roving off-ball defender. The jumper is a bit streaky off the bounce but when he’s hot, he’s hot– as evidenced by five made threes in the 1H alone against Centennial. Edwards is also capable of scoring on post-up’s in the midpost, pivoting to hit baseline fadeaways or stepping through on hard closeouts to score or draw foul contact around the basket. His combination of speed and ball skills give him a nice upside as an on-ball creator at the next level.

14p vs Woodlawn
-One of the most dynamic athletes in the area at the guard position, Edwards’ recruitment is picking up a ton of steam with juco and prep school coaches for good reason. In his first game back from injury Edwards scored 14 points while showing his 2-way impact. Edwards raced back to glass a block in transition, blocked a 3 later in the same quarter on a long closeout, sprinted into the frame to grab a steal from behind in transition, hit a pull-up 3 OTB, came up with a huge one-handed O board in the paint to draw the foul (hit both FTs) to put his team up 2 end of 3Q, missed a 3 but grabbed his own miss to force a shot that sent him to the FT line again, picked a pocket at halfcourt and hit his teammate with the assist, and flew across the paint to block a shot at the rim late in the 4Q. His dynamic athleticism and ability to play either guard spot while playing with a motor and hitting perimeter shots– would not be surprised to see him reach the D1 level after another year of development.

Without his backcourt mate in Barrett, Edwards had to do quite literally everything for this Catonsville team. He’s put up impressive numbers this season and it has been out of necessity in order for his group to stay in punching distance. The dynamic 6-foot-1 combo guard was the best prospect on the floor thanks to his blend of burst, athleticism at the rim and his overall skillset. He finished with a game-high 24 points and probably could’ve finished with 30+ if he was hunting for himself. Instead, he got into the paint whenever he pleased and zipped skip passes to shooters spotting up or delivered dump off passes on a silver platter to guys under the rim, but the percentage from others was low to say the least. Still, it was good to see Edwards’ willingness and capability of making the right reads. He had multiple blocks above the rim as he sized up opposing players in transition. His best stretch came in the second quarter where he scored 11 of his 24 points as Catonsville trailed by 12 going into halftime.

Edwards caught our eye in the summer with drastic improvements in his overall skill set as well as his athleticism and consistently punching it on defenders with power. He has lived up to expectations for Catonsville and has them near the top of the Baltimore County standings all while emerging as the county POY favorite. If he can sustain this level of play, I’d fully expect the Comets to continue their run as county title contenders and prepare to make a serious run in the state playoffs. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is dynamic, a scoring threat from multiple levels and has shown real buy-in on the defensive end, which has helped him balloon 20 spots up the rankings to No. 42.

-Edwards has been hiding in plain sight as arguably the best player for a good Baltimore County team. He has the ball on a string, has a nice change of pace with the ball in his hands, and can really score in the halfcourt. Edwards is also incredibly fast in the open court and is a sneaky leaper off of one foot. Seems like a prime candidate to make an All-League Team for Baltimore County and should be prioritized by prep school and juco coaches.

has been putting his name on the map this summer and fall season with his dynamic play both offensively and defensively. Gavin spent a large part of Sunday in the backcourt collecting steals from his superb ball pressure. Finished a multitude of breaks from just stripping the ball away from the opposition during their early offense. He made it very difficult for the opponent to operate comfortably with the ball. He showed a nice touch on his jumpshot, and shot it well when shooting the ball in rhythm. Very impressive play from the senior Catonsville guard.

-One of my favorite new finds of the event, Edwards is a twitchy athlete that can accelerate really quickly whether it’s in transition or in the half court. Loved his change of pace on the ball as his dribbling cadence is really hard to time and as a result– difficult to stay in front of. Edwards can handle, shoot with range, and finish above the rim after weaving his way through crowded driving lanes inside the arc. Loved his creativity with the ball in his hands as a play-maker that can fit passes through some tight windows.
