Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Sage is a holder of one of the best individual defensive performances in Oklahoma this year. At the Tournament of Champions against one of Oklahoma’s premier scorers, Sage showed a remarkable combination of physical traits to fight through screens, cover ground and stay connected. While also not biting on pumpfakes and anticipating moves on the ball. It’s the type of attention to detail and focus, that should help him make his mark sooner, rather than later at the next level with Pitt State. Along with the potential for defense to be his calling card, Sage is a jack of all trades on offense. With improving handles and vision, to go along with a reliable jumper and off the ball movement.

A few years ago when Weatherford was breaking onto the scene as one of the top squads in Oklahoma, they would often rely on a 1-3-1 zone. Which even brought out national attention after one game ended 4-2. While they still do break out the zone at times, because it’s hard for teams to deal with their sheer size, the days of Eagles siting back and only playing zone is a thing of the past. And that’s in large part due to the effort Sage has made as an on ball defender.
The recent Pitt State commitment was given one of the toughest covers in the state, and he thrived. Great one on one defense, even with left on an island. Didn’t bite on ballfakes, just stayed tall and moved his feet. Played physical to deny entries, never backed down or flinched. Outstanding effort overall along with the one on one defense. Even sprinting and going headfirst into the baseline in efforts to chase down a looseball. Playing defense like that on elite perimeter scorers is a sure ticket to early playing time at the next level.

Ethan has started his grassroots season strong, having already dropped an eye-popping 24-point & 20-rebound game at the Duel in DFW. Ethan has great mobility and overall skills as a wing with his size. He plays physical and does not back down from defenders at the rim. Ethan is a plus-defender who has a natural feel for trapping opponents and forcing turnovers. He is not asked too often to create looks for others, but has still shown impressive flashes of being able to drive hard, attract help defenders, and kick out to open shooters.

Sage is a guy that you need on your team to win. He is great at setting on ball screens to get the ball handler open and does just as good of a job setting off the ball screens as well. He can shoot the three-pointer well enough which makes you have to respect his ability which gives his teammates opportunities to get to the basket because of him pulling the bigger player out to the perimeter to guard him. Sage is a guy who doesn’t mind going to rebound the ball once the shot has been put up and this helps his team get the ball up the court.

With a gigantic and athletic frontline by Class 4A standards, it’s fair to wonder if the Eagles draw straws in the lockerroom pregame to see which player gets to assault the rims. Today it was

‘s turn. Including a very nice two handed flush off a backdoor cut to end the first half. He got in on the dunking action again in the second half with a putback. His activity level on the offensive glass was off the charts as he did a lot of his damage when crashing the glass hard.
Similar to the notes on his twin brother from yesterday, Sage is a great 2025 wing prospect, who is gaining athleticism as he grows into his lanky body. He was an inside-outside threat, with 15 points and a game high 9 rebounds. The size, athleticism and versatility Sage and his brother bring to Weatherford is rare find for a small town program.

Seemingly to his teammate Kennedy, Sage stepped up in the second half as a connector type player. He made the right passes, including a good pick’n roll ball read. And another patient drive where he kicked it out to an open teammate for a three. The passing and flashes of playmaking skills for the wing were good signs of development. Especially paired with his mobility and discipline on the defensive end.
