Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Matched up with a big and talented Perkiomen frontcourt, Butts more than held his own while contributing 10 points to the runaway win. He scored all but one of his points in a first half that saw Haverford establish a 20-point advantage, consistently setting up shop on the right block and scoring efficiently over his left shoulder. Butts was able to use his quickness to beat the Panther defenders to his spot in the lane and get off the ground swiftly for smooth jump hooks. Once he started commanding double teams, he was effective kicking the ball out to shooters or hitting moving cutters for easy layups. He remains available as a blue-collar option in the frontcourt at the scholarship level.

Butts looked like a future star as a freshman for the Fords, but struggled at times to get his feet back under him as a junior after missing an entire season with an ACL tear. Now back on the court for more than a full year, the high-energy forward looked far closer to his old self throughout his senior season as a consistent double-figure contributor up front. He was effective using his size and athleticism as a finisher inside off dumpoffs or in transition, while also showing growth as a playmaker for himself or others off the dribble from the perimeter. He’s being pursued primarily at the D3 level right now but should certainly be on scholarship radars as a potential late add this spring.

Butts scored 12 points in a win over McDonogh (MD) and converts a lot of buckets around the painted areas of the floor. He is very effective running the floor in transition. Butts is a tad undersized at the 4/5 spot but doesn’t let that define him as a prospect. He would be a great pickup at the division two or junior college level. He showed that he can rebound the basketball. One of Butts intriguing skillsets is his ability to pass the basketball.

Manny had a solid weekend at the Gov and enjoyed an especially impressive game 1 in bracket play. He got whatever he wanted near the rim whether creating for himself inside or getting into good position for an easy catch-and-finish. Seemed to dominate his matchup and that carried the team through and up-and-down first game out. Finished well in an intense championship game but fouled out late, which the team could feel towards the final seconds.

Butts has been a key piece to the Haverford rotation since his freshman year and will look to use his final season both to secure an Inter-Ac title and solidify himself as a D1 recruit in the process. An athletic, high-motor hybrid post, Butts’ bread-and-butter is as an aggressive scorer on the blocks but he’s managed to steadily expand his game over the years as well. He’s able to step away from the rim for extended stretches as a floor-spacer from the arc and opportunistic driver putting the ball down past slower bigs. He remains and active and athletic presence inside on D with the ability to step out onto wings or guards for stretches on the perimeter as well. Lower D1 programs in search of frontcourt help should be evaluating Butts throughout the winter, with him having a chance to look like a steal for the right D2 program should he manage to slip through the cracks.

Butts outstanding play at the Gym Rats Live tourney proved he is now fully recovered from the knee injury that cost him the entire 2024-25 season and the start of this past season. He ran the floor extremely well, showing good speed and the ability to change directions in traffic for lay-ins at the rim. On half-court possessions, Butts frequently operated in a point-forward role and initiated FCP’s offense with attacks on the rim. Butts flashed slick dribble moves that got him into the paint for finishes in close with either hand. He also dropped several well-timed dimes to teammates. Butts drained a slew of threes too. A couple of those triples were from logo distance. This lefty’s weekend was highlighted by a 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists performance against Riverside UAA.

It feels like Butts has owned a polished interior game for years. Then near the end of the 2024-25 high school season as well as during the April grassroots circuit, Butts has showcased a developing stretch-4 skill set. He has splashed jumpers from the elbows as well as from behind the arc. Butts has also used his quick first step and physicality to score off one or two dribbles from the wing. He has flashed a smooth jump hook too. With his size and nose for the ball, Butts is a plus rebounder at both ends of the court. On defense, Butts is willing to sacrifice his body for charge calls. Plus, Butt is an intimidating rim protector. College coaches will love Butts size, agility, ability to run the floor and basketball IQ.

Butts is coming off his high scoring game of the season — 23 points in OT win against Episcopal Academy. That is great news for a Haverford team that faces a brutal schedule this weekend. On Friday night, the Fords take on Inter-Ac rival SCH Academy. Then on Saturday night, they face national powerhouse Perkiomen School. The Fords will need a monster weekend from Butts if they are going to survive that gauntlet. Butts is an agile wing prospect who can fill a lane on the fast break and then finish through contact. In the half-court he is a threat to post-up as well as score from the high post and via the offensive glass. On the perimeter, Butts can pop threes and get to the rack off dribble drives. Defensively, Butts is an underrated shot blocker.
